Saw that coming...

Confirmed: 2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class getting upgraded V6, twin-turbo V8

The hardcore Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG isn't the only E-Class model that gets a new heart for the 2012 model year. According to our sources within Mercedes-Benz, both the E350 and E550 models will receive new powerplants currently found elsewhere in the automaker's lineup.

The base E350 will now be powered by the automaker's new 3.5-liter V6 with direct-injection, an engine that we recently tested in the C350 sedan and SLK350 roadster. Rated at 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, the new engine provides power increases of 14 hp and 15 lb-ft over the current V6, while the use of direct-injection and a seven-speed automatic transmission will no doubt return improved fuel economy.

Moving along, the eight-cylinder E550 will ditch its naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 in favor of a twin-turbocharged 4.6-liter unit with direct-injection, currently found in the CL550 coupe. In the E-Class, this engine will be good for 402 hp and 443 lb-ft – improvements of 20 and 52, respectively.

Look for the refreshed E-Class range to debut this Fall.

Good, maybe the E350 will get decent mileage and have some decent power.

The V8s are getting smaller, but certainly more powerful. I approve. I'll take mine with a 6MT please.

NICE! I always loved the E550 Benz. I saw one in the dealership back in the beginning of '10 and couldn't believe that it was only $58K new (sticker)! I was impressed, the car was VERY NICE!

However, with this new change I wouldn't doubt it will approach closer to $70K.

Glad it only took Mercedes 5 years to make it to the 300+ HP V6 party and even at that, the numbers are average

TT V8 sounds great

How come the updated V6 was not introduced with the car at the redesign? Even the Ford Mustang had a 300 hp V6 before Mercedes. Talk about late.

the article states a 14 hp increase? its more like 35. anyways, they basically had too since the 2012 C got it, and there is no way the C should have the better engine than the E

Exactly. I was looking at the Mercedes E350 as my next family but since the Mustang has a 300+ horsepower V6 I went with that car instead.

Where is the *****ing that Benz's V-6 finally has joined everyone else after 5+ years? V-8 sounds nice, I doubt it will be badged E460 though, will be badged whatever the hell they want it to be called Benz has always had good V-8s but their V-6s have been pretty much last in class. Glad to see it finally updated.

Congrats SLLegacy99^on masters degree, hopefully it's a lucrative one.

About time on a competitive V6 in the E-class, although it was selling well with only 268hp from the 3.5L.
