VW celebrates GTI anniversary with 232-hp Edition 35

The Volkswagen GTI is the king of the hot hatches. Sure, there are more powerful, better-driving cars in the segment, but Volkswagen's hot Golf kicked off this niche of flingable sport compacts back in the mid-1970s, and it's quickly grown to become one of our favorite vehicle classes. When it comes to fun per dollar, you just can't beat a hot hatch.

To celebrate the 35th birthday of the Golf GTI, Volkswagen has created this, the 35 Edition, which goes on sale in Germany this week. Visually, the 35 Edition is set apart by a unique front bumper, special wheels, and '35' badging on the door sills and seats. The most important upgrade, however, is the substantial boost in power over the normal GTI – 25 horsepower – for a grand total of 235 hp.

Volkswagen hasn't said a word about availability here in the United States just yet, but we're keeping our fingers crossed. The Golf GTI 35 Edition makes its official debut at the infamous GTI Meet in Wörthersee, Germany, on June 1st.

My friend just bought her GTI this past week, and when I told her, she was super pissed. Red is her favorite color, and compared to her GTI, this '35' edition is a much better looking ride. It does look quite menacing from the front view.

Aww that's too bad. I myself would hold out for the R20 or Focus ST when they land stateside but it's nice to see the power bump. From 200hp 207lbft. Actually I've always wondered why they don't just use the 211hp 258lbft 2.0 from Audi. (Old A4 used the 200hp version at one point). Perhaps cost or fuel efficiency or just the fact that if better differentiates VW and Audi is the reason

Answered your own question.
The 2.0T is used in many applications with different tunes and minor differences but the basic block is the same.

The Golf R is probably going to be between 30-36k. It's not exactly quite the same price range as the GTI (although this 35 anniversary package probably will cost quite a bit more than your standard GTI).

I have to say these little hatches are growing on me. They did a good job with the new Golf/Rabbit/GTi

Nicely done, should appeal to a segment of buyers. Personally I don't want one.

It looks like they tried to make a "G" out of the LED DRL's (at least on the left side looking at it form the front)
