Lightbulb May 2011 Auto Sales Thread

DETROIT (Bloomberg) -- U.S. auto sales probably ran at the slowest pace of the year in May, a pause in demand before lower gas prices and rebounding production in Japan fuels the most annual purchases since 2008.

May light-vehicle deliveries, to be released tomorrow, may have run at a 12.1 million seasonally adjusted annual rate, the average estimate of 11 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. The pace exceeded 13 million each of the last 3 months and was 12.6 million in January, according to researcher Autodata Corp.

Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. are speeding returns to normal production after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami idled factories and created shortages of parts. The slowdown in May sales came about because limited supply of fuel-efficient cars like Toyota's Prius lifted prices and curbed purchases.

"Consumers were being told so dramatically after Japan that there's going to be a shortage of cars, but this is going to be a temporary situation and so many of them will just wait," said Alan Baum, principal of industry consultant Baum & Associates, who predicts 13 million auto sales in the U.S. for 2011.

"To the extent May is a reasonably poor month, I'm not going to get carried away and say that's going to transcend through the rest of the year." The slowdown in May sales came about because of limited supply of fuel-efficient car like Toyota's Prius lifted prices and delayed purchases.

U.S. sales of cars and light trucks may rise to 13 million this year, the average of 16 analysts' estimates compiled by Bloomberg. That would be the most since 13.2 million in 2008.

Average U.S. gasoline prices dropped for 14 straight days since May 11 to $3.80 a gallon for regular unleaded, according to AAA. Prices earlier in May were at the highest level since 2008, reducing demand as the country's vacation season started.

Lost production

The earthquake in Japan may result in 3 million to 3.5 million units of global production that will be lost or deferred into next year, according to researcher IHS Automotive. Worldwide light-vehicle production may rise to 73.7 million units this year from 71.9 million in 2010, according to IHS.

Toyota, which built 45% of its cars in Japan last year, may lead declines among major automakers with a 27% drop in May deliveries, the average of three estimates. Honda Motor Co., the 2nd-largest Japanese automaker by U.S. sales, may say sales fell 25%, the average of 3 estimates. Nissan Motor Co. deliveries may decrease 7.3%, the average of 3 estimates.

"Predominantly this is a supply issue," George Magliano, a New York-based senior economist for IHS Automotive, said in a telephone interview. "The auto market was developing considerable momentum coming into this month before issues related to Japan."

Hyundai benefits

Automakers benefiting from their Japan-based rivals' supply constraints may be led by Hyundai Motor Co. and affiliate Kia Motors Corp. Their combined U.S. sales may pass Toyota for the 1st time, according to Santa Monica, Calif.-based TrueCar.com. Deliveries for Hyundai and Kia may surge 43% in May to 115,434, behind only General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co., according to the auto pricing Web site.

Sales for Ford, the 2nd-largest U.S. automaker, may have dropped 0.5%, the average estimate of 5 analysts. Ford raised its vehicle prices a 3rd time this year by an average of $124, or 0.4% per vehicle this month, said Todd Nissen, a spokesman.

Higher prices and smaller discounts may result in Ford getting buyers to pay as much as $1,500 more per vehicle, Rod Lache, an analyst for Deutsche Bank AG, said in a May 20 research note.

GM deliveries may rise 1.5%, the average of 3 estimates. There are fewer estimates for GM sales this month because some analysts are prevented from publishing research after a lockup expired on the U.S. Treasury Department's ability to sell more of its shares.

Chrysler gains

Chrysler, which repaid $7.6 billion in U.S. and Canadian government loans this past month, may say sales increased 9.5%, the average of 5 estimates.

GM, the largest U.S. automaker, is struggling to sell down truck inventory that climbed to more than 111 days of supply at the end of April because its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models are competing against recently updated Ford pickups, Baum said.

"GM has a long-term problem until they're able to update those vehicles, because right now the Ford product is so much more attractive," said Baum. "For now, GM has to respond with incentives."

While total sales may have dropped, Ford's deliveries per selling day may have increased from May 2010. Barclays Capital estimates Ford daily sales rate, excluding year-earlier purchases of its Volvo brand, may rise 10%, while Credit Suisse Group AG predicts a 16% gain on that basis.

Pricing, incentives

GM this month offered rebates of as much as $4,505 as well as interest-free financing for as long as 60 months on the Silverado and Sierra, while offering no rebates on cars such as its Chevrolet Cruze or Buick LaCrosse, according to AIS Rebates, a Michigan-based provider of incentive data.

Average prices for the industry may increase by about $800 from April, led by a sequential gain of about $1,500 by Japan-based automakers, Himanshu Patel, an analyst for JPMorgan Chase & Co., wrote in a May 24 research note.

The following table shows estimates for car and light-truck sales in the U.S. Estimates for companies are a percentage change from May 2010, unadjusted for the difference in selling days. Forecasts for the seasonally adjusted annual rate, or SAAR, are in millions of vehicles.

Toyota, the world's largest automaker, has said it expects production in North America to return to about 70% of normal levels beginning in June, from about 30% in May. Honda forecast last week that North American production will return to 100% in August for all models except Civic small cars, and said May 17 that global production will return to normal before the end of the year.

Light-vehicle sales climbed to 11.6 million in 2010 from a 27-year low of 10.4 million in 2009. Deliveries still were 31% fewer than the 16.8 million annual average from 2000 to 2007, according to Autodata. A 12.1 million rate this month would be a 4.3% increase from the 11.6 million pace in May 2010.

May had 24 selling days, 2 fewer than a year earlier.

Toyota just announced rise of production in Japan to 90% for June.

Japanese work hard and fast.

If this happened in Eastern Europe, we would simply all move to Germany.
If this happened in USA, it would take a decade to return to normal.

:-).

Default Hyundai/Kia will likely top Toyota/Lexus for No. 3 sales spot in May

If forecasts from TrueCar.com are accurate, Hyundai and Kia will be the only automakers to post sales gains in the month of May. Mildly interesting news in itself, but the real shocking nugget is that the Korean conglomerate is expected to pass Toyota (including its Lexus luxury brand) as the third-best-selling automaker in the United States.

Surely there are multiple reasons why Toyota and Lexus sales are expected to drop in May (when compared to April, 2011 and May of 2010), but parts and inventory shortages stemming from the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan are front and center.

Credit also goes to Hyundai and Kia for the dramatic gains they have made on their Japanese and American competitors in the last few years, both in sales and in consumer perception. That said, Toyota seems likely to rebound in the coming months, so it will be an interesting exercise to follow the sales charts.

When all the numbers finally come in, TrueCar.com expects the month of May to show an eight-percent drop in sales from April. As you would expect, shortages of cars imported from Japan is partly to blame, but lowered incentives from all automakers is also cited as a contributing factor.

Chevrolet Cruze retail sales surge 150%
Combined GMC Terrain, Chevrolet Equinox retail sales rise 58% Buick and GMC retail sales rise for 20th successive month
Cadillac retail sales up 16th month in a row; Chevrolet’s up for 9th consecutive month
DETROIT – General Motors dealers in the United States reported 221,192 total sales in May, including a 9% increase in retail sales compared to May 2010. Retail sales for GM’s brands were again propelled by the company’s lineup of fuel-efficient passenger cars and crossovers. Total sales declined 1% on lower fleet volume.

For the month, Chevrolet Cruze had its best retail sales since its launch as Chevrolet dealers reported 18,996 retail deliveries. The GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox, GM’s compact crossovers, saw a combined retail sales increase of 58% during the month. Passenger car and crossover retail sales also rose substantially, up 32% and 17%, respectively.

"Customers continue to demand better fuel economy and our commitment to produce high-quality, fuel-efficient vehicles is paying off," said Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. Sales Operations. "We expect that fuel prices will continue to be volatile and we’re prepared to continue meeting the needs of an ever-changing market."

Compared to last year, May fleet sales were 16% lower as rental volumes declined 21%. Deliveries to commercial accounts rose 19% – the 14th consecutive month of commercial sales gains.

GM’s Newest Vehicles Retail Sales Increase 65% in May

Combined retail sales for vehicles launched since June 2009 – Chevrolet Equinox, Silverado HD, Cruze, Camaro Convertible and Volt; Buick LaCrosse and Regal; GMC Sierra HD and Terrain; and Cadillac SRX, CTS Wagon and CTS Coupe – jumped 65% during May and are up 74% for 2011.

Passenger Cars

During the month, total sales of GM passenger cars increased 13%. Retail sales of passenger cars rose 32% on the continuing strength of the Cruze, which was up 150% compared to the Chevrolet Cobalt it replaced. Also contributing to the gain were solid retail sales for the Buick Regal and an increase of 28% in retail sales for the Cadillac CTS.

“The Cruze, Regal and CTS Coupe are attracting new customers to GM,” Johnson said. “These vehicles are a strong reason why we’re gaining share in key states like California, New York and Florida so far this year.”

Crossovers

Total crossover sales declined 1%, while retail sales were up 17% compared to last year’s May. GM’s crossover retail sales were the highest ever for the month of May and were driven by a 58% increase in combined retail sales for the 32 mile-per-gallon highway rated Equinox and Terrain. Both of GM’s compact crossovers set retail sales records for the month with Equinox retail sales up 62% and Terrain’s 48% higher than May 2010.

“Customers love the 610-mile range that our compact crossovers provide and they get it without sacrificing capability or style,” Johnson said.

For the year-to-date, retail sales of GM’s crossovers were up 27%.

Pickups

Total combined sales of Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche, and GMC Sierra decreased 14%; with retail sales down 17% versus a year ago. For the year-to-date, retail sales for GM’s full-size pickups are up 15%, while total sales of 212,478 units represent a 13% increase compared to the 1st 5 months of 2010.

Month-end dealer inventory in the United States stood at about 584,000 units, up about 7,000 units compared to April and about 177,000 higher than May 2010.

DEARBORN, Mich., June 1, 2011 – Consumer demand remained strong in May for Ford’s new fuel-efficient vehicles and powertrains, bringing significant year-over-year sales gains for small cars and Explorer.

“Customers increasingly are demanding new products that deliver compelling fuel economy,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “Ford’s new fuel-efficient products and powertrains arrived at the right time – just as fuel efficiency became even more of a consideration among consumers.”

Ford’s 2 all-new small cars combined had sales of 29,423 in May, up 74% versus a year ago. It was Ford’s largest small car month since May 2008. Fiesta sales were 7,120, and Focus sales were 22,303, up 32% versus a year ago.

The Ford Fusion midsize car also has started 2011 strong – with five straight monthly sales records. In May, Fusion sales totaled 24,666, its 2nd highest month ever, and up 10% versus a year ago. 80% of customers equipped their new Fusion with a 4-cylinder engine, up from 50% when the car debuted 5 years ago. Sales of the Lincoln MKZ were up 24% in May and the MKZ Hybrid accounted for 22% of sales.

Explorer sales totaled 13,318, up 135% versus a year ago. This is the highest sales for Explorer in 47 months. In the 1st 5 months of 2011, the new Explorer is setting a torrid pace, with year-to-date sales totaling 55,401, up 120%. In June, Explorer will surpass last year’s full-year sales total of 60,687. Explorer has class-leading highway fuel economy of 25 mpg.

Escape sales totaled 23,140, up 21%. 50% of customers now equip their Escape with a 4-cylinder engine, up from 40% a few years ago.

Truck sales were lower in May, with higher gas prices likely causing some buyers to defer purchases.

Still, Ford’s F-Series truck remained the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. with May sales of 42,399 (down 15% versus a year ago) and year-to-date sales of 214,461 (up 11%). The new 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine accounted for 41% of F-150 retail sales in May, up 4 percentage points from April. The total V6 mix, including the new 3.7-liter engine, was 55% – surpassing sales of F-150s equipped with V8s.

Sales Summary
In May, total sales were 192,102, equal to a year ago. Retail sales were up 5%, and fleet sales were down 8%. (Commercial was down 1 percent, government was down 9%, and daily rental was down 13%.)

• May 2011 sales of 10,457 rose 13.6% above May 2010 sales
• Demand for the all-new 2012 Audi A7 was strong for the month
• Sales of Audi TDI clean diesel vehicles continue to far outpace intial predictions
Audi today reported its 5th-consecutive record-setting month for 2011 with the best May U.S. sales in company history. Last month, demand for Audi luxury vehicles increased 13.6% to 10,457 vehicles sold, from 9,205 vehicles sold in May 2010, marking the 3rd-best month in Audi of America history.

The strong May 2011 results were buoyed by a significant buyer response to the all-new 2012 Audi A7, with 812 vehicles sold, as consumers respond to the stylish, technologically advanced vehicle featuring the Audi 1st-to-market Google Earth navigation system. The Audi A8 flagship sedan also performed favorably in May 2011, with 495 vehicles sold, a 661.5% increase over the same period in 2010.

In May 2011, Audi recorded year-over-year sales increases with 7 of its models: the Audi A3, the Audi A4, the Audi A8, the Audi Q5, the Audi Q7, the Audi R8 and the Audi TT.

Consumers continued to show preferences for the brand’s clean diesel technology. Sales of the fuel-efficient A3 models increased 33.9% year-over-year to 664 vehicles sold, with the Audi A3 TDI clean diesel model accounting for 55% of the sales mix in the lineup. Demand for the popular Audi Q7 full-size luxury sport-utility vehicle remained strong with a sales increase of 26.9% year-over-year, with the Audi Q7 TDI clean diesel model accounting for 40% of the sales mix.

CHERRY HILL, N.J., June 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. today announced a nearly 8% year-to-date sales increase, with 20,036 units sold in May 2011 – resulting in total YTD sales of 112,255. "While we have had a very strong start to 2011, and demand for our products in dealerships remains at record levels, we are now experiencing a slowdown in deliveries following the disruption to vehicle and parts production in Japan as a result of the March earthquake and tsunami," said Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc. "We expect this to continue in the short term while the production situation in Japan returns to normal. Even allowing for this temporary slowdown in deliveries, we still expect 2011 to be the second best year ever for the Subaru brand in the U.S."

Subaru Legacy sales increased 1 percent and Subaru Outback sales increased nearly 11 percent from May 2010. The Subaru Forester and Impreza saw month-to-date decreases of 35% and 39%, respectively.

Post Hyundai

Hyundai Motor America today announced all-time record May sales of 59,214 units, up 21% compared with the same record-breaking period last year.

This marks the 5th consecutive month that Hyundai has set an all-time monthly sales record. For the year, total sales are up 29%, with retail volume rising 40%. Sales to fleet accounts represent 11% of the total sales year-to-date and just 7% for the month of May. 34% of Hyundai vehicles sold in May achieved 40 MPG fuel economy ratings.

"May was another outstanding month for Hyundai," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's executive vice president of national sales. "With high gas prices continuing to alter consumer behavior, car buyers are increasingly looking at Hyundai's fuel-efficient line-up, with the all-new Accent, Elantra sedan, and Sonata Hybrid all delivering 40 miles per gallon, standard."

"The launch this month of the Assurance Trade-In Value Guarantee program, which takes the uncertainty out of future resale value, is another important plank in our comprehensive strategy to improve consideration, increase consumer confidence and continue to elevate the Hyundai brand," Zuchowski added.

"Consumer response to the Assurance Trade-In Value Guarantee program has been terrific – it's already driving a much higher level of consideration and brand lift than our original Assurance job-loss program, and is a key factor in our on-going retail sales strength," said John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America's president and CEO. "While we've still got a lot of work to do, we're getting good response to our consumer-driven Hyundai recipe -- Assurance programs like Trade-In Value Guarantee and America's Best Warranty, industry-leading fuel economy, and the freshest designs in the industry."

Genesis' sustained growth trajectory continued with May representing the 23rd consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases for Hyundai's 1st premium products. Equus continues its strong launch, with sales and market share exceeding targeted levels.

While Hyundai sales were strong in all regions of the country, California was the brightest spot, with sales up 95% so far in 2011 vs. last year.
