Toyota: Prius V orders well above target (52k orders)
TOKYO -(MarketWatch)- Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) said Tuesday it has received 52,000 orders in Japan for the new minivan version of its Prius hybrid, one month after its launch.
The number far outstrips the company's 3,000 monthly sales target for the new model, which is called the Prius Alpha.
Toyota launched the minivan hybrid on May 13 after a delay due to the impact of the earthquake and tsunami on March 11.
Toyota's flagship Prius hybrid model received 180,000 orders after its release in June 2009 in Japan, compared with a monthly sales goal at launch of 10,000.

52k is a lot for Japan and this kind of relatively expensive vehicle. Lets say it averages 5k per month, thats top 10 car territory.
Important thing to note is that this is without eco subsidies from last year that made Prius 25k/month car for a year.

I take it you mean in the US market, not the wider world.

there is no mpg benefit from new batteries, they all get same mpg.
So far what we saw from other brands is 20lbs less weight... same space utilization.
I wouldnt pay extra $500-$1k for that and for probably worse reliability.

How does one forecast 3k sales and get 52k sales?
IMHO though, it's better that way. It would be way worse if it's the other way around (like you expect 52k a month but you only sell 3000 :P)

I suspect it will settle down to 5-6k per month eventually. Which is top 10 in Japan as it is smaller market than US.
