problem is not the size of the lineup - theirs rivals VW, which is local leader here, problem is that cars are missing their sales targets (so they are not well positioned in the market).

At dealer meeting in Barcelona 2008 (pan european meeting), dealers were told Toyota wants 12% of European market share by 2012. That was spectacular failure by TME, as they lost 30% market share since that time, and are now well below 4%.

looked at actual data
TME 2007: 5.6% of the market, 1.24 million cars sold
TME 2010: 4.4% of the market, 0.78 million cars sold

Ok, Toyota's vehicles are not selling too well in Europe, but for what reasons? What should Toyota do to improve?

I think Toyota tried to hard to position themselves like premium but conservative brand in Europe. TME is SLegacy's wet dream - best lineup of small 4cly petrols in the world (Valvematic, Start/stop, all new engines), and strong lineup of mid sized diesels (90hp, 126hp, 150hp, 177hp), all with 6 speed transmissions be it manuals or new 6AT for diesels or brand new world leading S-CVT's with paddles, or 6 speed robotized manuals.

What happens? They are priced out of their league, and their lack of flashy design (both inside and out) leads to younger generations picking other cars.

VW, Skoda, Ford, Fiat, Opel, Peugot, Citroen sell cars that technologically lacking compared to modern Toyotas (petrol lineup of European manufacturers is decade old, at least), but public does not really care if it is 132hp Valvematic 1.6l engine with 6 speed, or 116hp decade old facelifted block with 5 speed... they care about the price.

This is what Toyota USA is doing right and what TME is doing wrong.

TME doesnt have old and cheap diesels, only top of the line... which are then priced 3k more than Petrols.

You can get Hyundai i30 diesel at 30% lower price than Auris 1.4 D4D. Thats significant difference. Here is the competition pricing example:
Hyundai i30 1.6l 90 hp 5sp diesel 20k
Auris 1.4 D4D 90hp 6spd 26k (after big discounts)
Citroen C4 90hp 5sp diesel 21.5k (brand new car)

That just doesnt fly... I am not sure how did they think they will get to 12% by the end of 2012.

^^^ Great analysis. Toyota struggles seem to flow to Lexus as well, they don't have a solid strategy there. There are also way more brands in Europe than here and they excel in the small/compact segment.

Yen is killing Toyota there too.

Doesn't it also have to do with brand loyalties as well? I'm assuming Europeans would primarily favor European car brands over Japanese, Korean or American or whatever other brands.

somewhat, but it is TME that said in 2008 they want 12%, not me :-)... and they lost 35% of the market since 2008.

Well hopefully Toyota can reorganize and focus more on Europe. Then again, quality is what matters, and sales goals should not be the #1 priority.

quality and sales go hand in hand... Toyota having 4% hold of European market is quite horrible.

They just announced Verso-S pricing, and it is so-so. In UK, it is very expensive and nobody will ever buy it. It is 50% (!!!) more expensive than Nissan Note that is its competitor.

German pricing is more competitive and carries slight premium...

... cool standard feature is standard multimedia interface (5.x" color screen shown at auto shown, something like entune) with standard backup camera... in car that is basically Yaris MPV.

Very clean and sleek compact. Too bad it looks like we won't be getting it in North America (the hybrid version). At least we get the regular Yaris, which looks elegant as well.

I think they managed to make Yaris HSD to look like Premium version of Yaris, which is what was needed for European market.

Hopefully it sells well over in Europe. It definitely looks like a premium version of the Yaris.

Sweet! Thanks for the vids spwolf.

We need this in N. America. But we'll probably be out of luck once again.

I think the problem is that they deem these premium small cars too expensive and American consumers won't buy them as they do in Europe.
