Replacing our 2001 RX300.....but with what?
Our 2001 RX300 hit 150k recently and now my wife wants to get something else. We like the Toyota Highlander/Hybrid but maybe their is something more fun out there. Any suggestions under 40k

define fun. almost anything's more fun than a 2001 rx300.

Size wise, my wife has a 2009 Highlander and it is slightly bigger than her sister's ~2005 RX330. It may be hard to size down into a 4 Runner which I remember to be slightly smaller. Power wise, the V6 is nice but the I4 is a bit lacking.
The only difference is that my wife paid less, but she has to get her service done "outside" instead of in a little office. Of, and she doesn't get free Diet Coke either.

I second the Venza. It retains the ride of the RX while having almost equal room, push button start, Bluetooth, Sat radio, a nice 7" Nav, camera, back up sensors, and a great look. Plus you can get a fully loaded model for about 10k less than the highlander or the 4runner.

Highlander seems to be the most logical next step. Venza V6 AWD after that. I almost got into a highlander when it first came out but went with the FJ instead. Extremely fun if you can go from luxury to function. Makes me smile every morning when I drive it, but polarizing function and design and not for some people. And absolutely bulletproof in all weather conditions.
I would also recommend 4runner, but I do not like the current boxy look. I would look for low mileage previous gen models. Those were fun and bullet proof also.
How about a CPO RX350?

If you're considering a Ford, the Flex is higher rated than the new Explorer. Also check out the new Edge. Reviews have been mixed, but my sister and brother-in-law have a 2011 Edge and they are very pleased with it.
Also check out the Honda Accord Crosstour (ducking) which is a much nicer vehicle than it looks.
Unless you're going to buy a new domestic vehicle, it's probably best to wait until fall / winter when the earthquake related shortages and used car price spikes have abated.
