Doubtful. Probably a ratio of registered vehicles to thefts. I don't know about most of those areas but Yakima, WA is a tiny city. There might not be as many cars in Yakima as there are stolen in NYC. It HAS to be some sort of ratio.

I will admit I am surprised that Phoenix is not on the list. We are so close to Mexico. Like San Diego we have a big problem with cars getting stolen and ending up in mexico. I actually saw a report on the news where they put a tracking device in a loaded Chevy Tahoe. When they followed the signal 4 weeks later they found that the chief of police in a little Mexican border town was actually driving the stolen car

I mean, they talk about professional car thiefs, but I'm betting a lot of those numbers are just from people messing around and breaking into other cars to joy ride. I know quite a few friends in ESSJ (east side san jose) who've had their car stolen, and then found again a couple blocks down the road. Nothing missing, no vandalism, or anything. Seems like the the thieves just took the car, drove it around for a bit, then ditched it on the side of the road. One time I think they push started my friend's Del Sol when it was parked on a hill, ended up stalling and hitting the curb at the bottom of the hill, and just left it there.
I'm just saying, I've never heard of an incident where a car got stolen and never turned up again. What is this talk about shipping the car out to Asia? I'm sure there's professional thieves out there, but the article makes it sound like it's commonplace.

I'm surprised Riverside, CA isn't on the list. I've heard SO many stories over the last 5 years about cars being stolen around here. MOST of them are recovered as shells. It's kinda scary, around here they just jack up your car a bit and load it on a flat bed and are off with it. Most cars don't have tilt sensors so it never even triggers the alarm. Almost happened to me once too, thank god for 2 way alarm systems and tilt sensors!
The Inland Empire is notorious for stolen Honda's. So many get stolen here, i was constantly worried about it when i had my Prelude =/
