Two Kia ads that recently won awards in Cannes have had many people scratching their heads and asking, "What were they thinking?"
The ads are split down the middle – one side is an innocent cartoony scene with a man or boy and a little girl. On the other side is the same scene, except in its R-rated version.
Kia on Friday called the ads "offensive," and said they had no relationship with Moma, the Sao Paulo advertising agency that created the spots.
The ads were purportedly for Kia's dual-zone air conditioning, and read "A different temperature on each side."
They won a 2011 Cannes Lions awards.
"The ad is undoubtedly inappropriate, and on behalf of Kia Motors we apologize to those who have been offended by it," Kia said in a statement on its Facebook page.
"We can guarantee this advertisement has never and will never be used in any form in the United States," they said.
The wording carefully distances Kia's American arm from the advertising and the firm, but its unclear whether Kia's headquarters in Seoul contracts with Moma.
Moma has done one-off advertising pieces in the past, spoofing Facebook, Twitter and Skype in retro ads that make it seem like the sites were advertising in the 1950s. But we doubt any of those companies got upset by the rated G pieces Moma produced.

Great artwork! The one on the right mature side. Who ever did it did a darn good job executing the line, lighting and mood.
Poor ad as a concept.
People who are offended by it... dont even wanna go there.
There is a possibility that this ad doesn't run like a spread, instead it has a page that separates them so it doesnt seem that obvious

Who actually believes car-ads to start with?
If one could judge a vehicle by its ads, Mike and I wouldn't be out there doing reviews, and Consumer Reports wouldn't have much to say either.

Most Kia ads = immature and korny. This makes it clear the type of demographic the company is trying to appeal to (cheesy America). Definitely a turnoff and disappointing, considering many of their recent models are quite polished.

Kia is putting some distance between itself and the racy ads for the company's dual-zone climate control on the Sportage. According to the automaker, the sultry print ads were penned by the Brazilian ad agency Moma. Apparently, Kia Motors America has no business relationship with the company and didn't approve the print ads in any way. The manufacturer called the clever spots "undoubtedly inappropriate" in a short release. Despite disavowing any association with the marketing company that created the spots, the KMA statement goes on to apologize to anyone who may have been offended by the materials.
The ads featured children's tales in two temperatures, with a safe, cool telling of the stories in the left panels, and a more heated variant to the right. You can check them out for yourself in the gallery below. The art was reportedly displayed at a festival in Cannes, though we wouldn't expect to see them resurface stateside anytime soon.
