The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported June sales of 26,865 vehicles, an increase of 15.1% from the 23,331 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago.

Year-to-date, BMW Group is up 18% on sales of 143,521 in the 1st 6 months of 2011 compared to 121,585 in the same period in 2010.

"With all that's gone on in the world in the last month, our own economy and auto market are still volatile places so you'd better have the right models and business strategy to attract customers in this environment," said Jim O'Donnell, CEO, BMW of North America. "We've been fortunate to have both and that's why we're in the market leading position for the first half of 2011 and more new models are on the way giving us the opportunity to stay there."

BMW Brand Sales

Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 12.8% in June for a total of 21,637 compared to 19,182 vehicles sold in June, 2010.

Year-to-date, the BMW brand is up 13% on sales of 113,705 January through June compared to 100,632 sold in the 1st 6 months of 2010.

In June, the BMW X3 SAV continued the strong sales success that began with its launch in January. Year-to-date, the new X3 has sold 12,725 compared with 3,439 in the same period of 2010, a 270% increase. The BMW 5 Series, now with a full-year of U.S. sales, continued its sales growth with June posting an almost 13% increase over June 2010. Year-to-date the 5 Series has sold 25,287 compared to 15,846 in the 1st 6 months of 2010, a nearly 60% increase. Convertibles, in particular the Z4 Roadster and the new 6 Series Convertible, gained additional traction in June with the Z4 up almost 120% and the 6 Series up nearly 80% over the previous June.

BMW Pre-Owned Vehicles

In June, sales of BMW used vehicles (including certified pre-owned and pre-owned) totaled 12,801, a decrease of 4.8% from the 13,445 sold in June 2010.

Year-to-date, BMW used vehicle sales are down 5% on volume of 79,511 compared to 83,723 in the 1st 6 months of 2010.

MINI Brand Sales

MINI USA reported sales of 5,228 automobiles in June, a new record for the month. The June 2011 sales are an increase of 26% over the 4,149 sold in June, 2010.

"Fuel prices have moderated in the last month or so but we are still seeing an increase in MINI sales," said Jim McDowell, Vice President MINI USA. "It's not just the new Countryman that's popular but the entry hardtop as well, telling me that more Americans are embracing small cars as a rational choice."

Year-to-date, MINI sales in the U.S. are up 42.3% on volume of 29,816 compared to 20,953 in the first six months of 2010. The January to June numbers are the highest achieved in that six month period since MINI was launched in the U.S. in 2002.

Subaru of America, Inc. today announced June 2011 sales of 19,794. The company registered its best June sales for Legacy and Outback as both models continued their 3-year growth in sales. Overall year-to-date sales were up 4.83% continuing positive Subaru sales results in recent times.

"We still have record demand for our products in dealerships; however, we are working through a low inventory period after the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan," said Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc. "Our dealers managed to be incredibly efficient with the inventory available and the situation is improving all the time. We expect 2011 will still be the second best year ever for Subaru in the U.S."

"Customer demand hasn't let up and our dealers did a terrific job selling cars as soon as they arrived at their stores," said Bill Cyphers, senior vice president, sales, Subaru of America, Inc. "We continue to outperform our initial expectations for this period thanks to more production arriving than we first anticipated and better efficiency in getting our cars to dealers and out to customers."

Post Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) today reported June 2011 sales of 8,299 units, nearly doubling June 2010 sales with an increase of 97.7%.

The increase continues a sales surge that, for the 1st 6 months of 2011, makes Mitsubishi the fastest growing automaker in the United States.

"We are pleased that Mitsubishi's message of styling, fuel efficiency and value are resonating with customers," said MMNA President & CEO Yoichi Yokozawa. "We feel that we are just at the beginning of an extended period of growth in the U.S. market."

This marks the 1st month of more than 8,000 Mitsubishi sales in nearly 3 years (since August 2008). It was the highest June sales total since 2007 and the 10th consecutive month that the company has achieved a year-over-year sales increase. Year-to date sales are up 66.5%.

Sales in 2011 have been sparked by the introduction of the Outlander Sport small CUV, with its fuel-efficient powertrain. Outlander Sport and its larger "sibling", the Outlander, were recently featured in the acclaimed "World's Most Dangerous Road" advertising campaign, highlighting the world's most advanced All Wheel Control system. In July, Mitsubishi's "Own Every Road" summer sales event will expand on that theme.

"Adding to the excitement for our company and our dealers is the fact that we're also only a few months away from the American sales launch of our all-new, all-electric Mitsubishi 'i'," Yokozawa added. "We'll begin digital advertising for the 'i' this month."

Other sales highlights include:

Sales of Mitsubishi cars were up 41% in June and are up 43% year-to-date.
Sales of Mitsubishi SUVs and CUVs were up 260% in June and are up 119% year-to-date.
Sales of products assembled at MMNA's U.S. facility in Normal, Illinois, were up 243% in June and are up 116% year to date.

Wow...Lexus not even half of Mercedes and BMW and barely beating Audi. Hopefully things can only go up from here.

Post Hyundai

Hyundai Motor America today announced sales of 59,209 vehicles in June, a 16% increase compared with the same period a year ago. This represents an all-time sales record for both the month of June and the 1st 1/2of the year for Hyundai, breaking the marks set last year. This also marks the 6th consecutive month that Hyundai has set an all-time monthly sales record.

For the 1st 6months of the year, total sales are up 26%, with retail volume rising 38%. Sales to fleet accounts represent 13% of the total sales year-to-date and 12% for the month of June. Forty percent of Hyundai vehicles sold in June achieved 40 MPG fuel economy ratings, an all-time record for the brand.

“With the recent launch of our all-new Accent, Hyundai now has the freshest and most fuel-efficient sedan lineup in the industry with Sonata Hybrid and Elantra sedan rounding out our current trio of 40 MPG vehicles, with the 40 MPG Veloster right around the corner,”
said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America’s executive vice president of national sales. “We are confident going into the 3rd quarter that the company is on track for its best year ever.”

Genesis’ sustained growth trajectory continued with June representing the 24th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases, while Equus continues to delight premium luxury sedan buyers while exceeding sales and market share targets.

Not true. Toyota's sales in June were better than in May. They bottomed out in May. It will only get better from here as their inventories get replenished. Eight of the twelve cars that Toyota builds in North America resumed in full production June. Production will increase to 90% of pre-quake levels at their Japan plants this month. Those cars should be arriving at US dealers soon.

Big demand for compact cars like the Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra and Volkswagen Jetta and an unexpected uptick in sales for pickups and some SUVs helped lift auto sales about 7 percent last month.

So far in 2011, light auto sales are up 13 percent to 6,333,313 units. But it wasn’t all good news for every automaker; Japan’s two largest brands – Honda and Toyota – suffered, as did a perennial strong seller, Subaru. More affected by the March earthquake that devastated northern Japan than most automakers, weak inventories likely helped fuel sales to other automakers like Hyundai, Kia, Ford, Nissan and Chevrolet.

The Americans
Ford division experienced positive sales for nearly all of its models, with the biggest gains coming from the Fiesta (up 438 percent, although last May was its first month on the market), Crown Victoria (up 76 percent), Explorer (up 56 percent) and Escape (up 43 percent). It was also Lincoln’s most improved month in recent memory, with only the Navigator, MKT and Town Car seeing declines.

GM saw a solid performance for all but its Cadillac brand. Chevrolet’s Cruze and Equinox continued to lead the charge, but the big Traverse crossover saw an unexpected 40 percent decline. GMC had a great month, however, and even its Acadia crossover – a Traverse twin – was up 7 percent. At Buick, the Enclave saw a dip, as did the now-discontinued Lucerne, but LaCrosse and Regal made up for those drops.

Chrysler, meanwhile, can’t seem to get its namesake division off the ground, but the rest of its lines are going gangbusters. Jeep sales were way up thanks especially to the Grand Cherokee (up 208 percent) and Compass (up 278 percent). Chrysler’s big sedans don’t seem to be taking off, however. The Chrysler 300 was down 24 percent and the Dodge Charger was off 15 percent, although both are showing a slight improvement for the year.

The Asians
Among Asian automakers, Nissan saw a solid 17 percent gain that matches its half-year improvement. The automaker delivered an impressive 1,708 Leaf Evs, a figure that accounts for nearly half of all Leafs sold so far in the U.S. Infiniti was much the opposite, with sales down across the board – except for the big QX56 (up 27 percent).

It was a great month for Mitsubishi, which nearly doubled its sales from last year’s particularly low numbers. Mazda also saw a modest increase, but Subaru tanked thanks to low dealership inventories caused by the March earthquake in Japan. Subaru is also gearing up for a redesign of one of its three main models, the Impreza.

Toyota and Honda were both way off thanks in part to weak inventories due to slow production. Neither brand had many volume models with improved figures.

Hyundai and Kia continued the Korean roll, with sales up for both brands. Look for another boost in the next few weeks as the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio reach dealer showrooms.

The Europeans
Buoyed by its S60, Volvo sales were way up. Audi’s best June ever came courtesy of gains almost across the board, although its Q5 was down 12 percent. BMW, MINI and Mercedes-Benz all saw strong months as well. Mercedes-Benz has a small lead on BMW as the luxury segment’s top performer.

Volkswagen, Europe’s largest automaker, continues to have reason to celebrate thanks to a huge 88 percent jump in Jetta sales (including a 121 percent increase for the sedan alone). With its New Beetle and Passat models just weeks from arriving in showrooms, it’s likely that VW will see big gains this fall.

Leftlane’s bottom line
Japan’s big two continue to suffer, even though inventory situations weren’t generally as bad as analysts had initially predicted.

But it was good news for almost everyone else, especially Volkswagen, which is doing exactly what it intended to do with its mass market-styled Jetta sedan, and Hyundai/Kia, which break records every month.

I don't work at a dealer, but I can tell you it is definitely an inventory issue. Toyota themselves confirmed production of Lexus models are still not at 100%.

No it won't get worse. Toyota's production continues to increase close to pre-quake levels on all models, and Toyota's new product onslaught is set to begin very soon. The worst sales months for Toyota this year, May and June, are behind them. July should definitely be a stronger month, and things will only go up from there.

Both of the local Lexus dealers have lots that are half-full or less. Hardly any cars on the lot compared to what they used to have/should have.
