My Camry had over 100k miles when I traded it and it did pretty good in Chicago weather. I never had any problems, but browsing the toyotanation forum might be your best bet on the 4runner and Camry.

A 2002-2004 Subaru WRX would be a good choice if you're looking for an AWD car.
I use a FWD 99 Saturn SL2 during the winter and it's an excellent car to get me through the snow. Old school Saturns are even cheaper than most older Camrys and they usually have low miles.

QX4'S are nice, i've always been a fan, but the onlder ones, 97-00 were a much more dated looking compared to 01+ even though there were just minor tweaks done. But the newer ones have HID's, wood and leather wheel, bigger rims, and most importqntly a more powerful engine. One thing to note on these is the suspension is quote soft and even later on in its life, the rears were drum brakes, something that surprised me, i would have exepeted infniti to step up to the plate and put disks all around. Also, watch for rust, the hatch and bottom of the fenders is where they usually tend to rust, and make sure the 4wd works as most people drive it in 2wd a majority of the time

How "old" are you willing to go? If I found a nice Gen 2 Camry with the options I wanted on it I would spring for it. Also, have you looked at 4x2 Hiluxes and Tacomas? I love my little '94 Pickup and they're great on gas and extremely useful.

it felt heavy, gas mileage was horrible (mid 10s) , tranny crapped out around 110k miles, sunroof got stuck but was under warranty.
brother in law had 98.
other than that, it was reliable.
it's July, so are you still looking for a winter car?

The Matrix...LOL, I had an AWD Model. just pay close attention to the seals in the rear differential. If they go, and start leaking you have about 5 days to get it to the dealer, or the fluid will be gone.

Not saying this is a normal thing for these cars, but that was my experience anyway...
Honestly other than that (and the color) it was a good car, I should have kept it (it was the wife's car)...
Oh, and the other thing, if you want good fuel economy, go with the 4runner over this. I got 180 miles city on a tank of fuel(12gallons IIRC). about 12-15mpg avg.

The AWD on the Matrix (assuming all-season or winter tires) gives generally good traction, but the low ground clearance may limit it in deep snow. Toyota should have done to it what Subaru did with the Forester and Outback....given it a slightly-raised suspension for added ground-clearance.
