Lemon could mean a lot of things, with a good lawyer and a small issue that new car payment that looked like nothing on the day it was new could be what forces many of these previous owners to take legal action with a Lemon Law.
Another thing is what bothers one person might not bother another![Smilie](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
A friend of mine bought a Lemon Ford Escort ZX2 for his daughter, the dealer gave him a 150k extended warranty and the car only had 30k on it, the original problem was something minor, he never had an issue with it

Perhaps someone can shed some light on this. But I'm in the market for a LS460 and went to check out a 2007 LS460 at our local dealership in central Missouri (larget dealer in town - sell new toyotas/mercedes/bmw/ford/etc....ie very reputable dealer network).
I looked on their website and found that the car was bought back as a "lemon" in California. At first I thought that it was specific to this car, but I looked at their other Lexus cars in stock and found that 10/11 preowned Lexus models (lots of IS 250/350's and a few RX's) were bought back as lemons in California. All the cars are 2007 or newer.
I'm thinking this was related to the recent class action lawsuit that took place in California. Were Cali owners eligible to give their cars back to Lexus by classifying them as a lemons? Does anyone know for sure? I find it hard to believe that every Lexus from Cali is a real lemon....

The lemon law classification can range from a simple as some kind of rattle or noise that cannot be corrected or large item that cannot be fixed within an 18 month/18,000 mile period from when the car was new. Of course there are other details in the arbitration process negotiations that are usually not publicized.
There was never any kind of class action lawsuit with Lexus or Toyota...and if there was, there would be tons of stories published about it by now. If a lemon law car buyback entails a safety/drive ability issue, i'm very certain Lexus will not sell the car wholesale at an auction. I know for a fact they keep the car and either send it to their engineering team to dissect, send the car to a technical school (T-TEN, or etc) or they crush it.
Just because a car fell under the CA Lemon Law buyback program doesn't mean its necessarily a bad car. There should be some sort of traceable history (esp if it was serviced at Lexus) to see what issues arose. Chances are most of those RX and IS you have seen are buybacks due to really small noise issues, but the Lemon Law covers from the smallest rattle to the most complex safety issues.
You can read more about CA Lemon Law here.

Just to close out the story, I did check with the dealership and they disclosed the fact that it was a California buyback right away. According to them, any issue that took 3 or more times to fix can be bought back in California. The issues listed on the LS in particular was in fact the wind noise issue. It also mentions that steering vibration was fixed.
The car itself is in excellent condition. I think whoever buys it will probably get a great deal if you can accept the history.

There are used car dealers here in CA, that specialize in selling only Toyota/Lexus Lemon Law vehicles. One is located in Costa Mesa, I went there with my son to look a couple of trucks, and we were amazed at how many so called lemons they had on the lot. The one he was most interested in was returned due to trans issues, and we were not comfortable with that so we moved on.
