No, this isn't a mule for the next-next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS. What you're looking at here is another "four-door coupe" for the Silver Arrow lineup – codenamed C117 – that will probably come to life as the CLC-Class.
These photos are a bit deceiving, since the added black cladding does add some extra heft to the vehicle's shape, but believe us when we say that this thing is smaller than you think. In fact, it's said to be based on a slightly longer version of the new platform that will underpin the refreshed A- and B-Class hatchbacks.
Our spies indicate that the car will be offered in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations, and that an AMG version is likely be in the works, producing over 300 horsepower. For the standard car, we're told that both gasoline and diesel versions will be available, with output numbers ranging anywhere from about 110 to 150 horsepower. Both a seven-speed dual-clutch and six-speed manual transmission are expected to be offered.
Look for the CLC to bow sometime in 2012 with the car actually hitting showrooms in 2013.

is this mercedes answer to the 1 series? I am also very confused by the need for this car. It wouldn't be the first time mercedes produced a car that had absolutely no use: C class hatchback (d/c a little while back because it sold so poorly and brought down the brand image)

The Baby-CLS or BLS/CLC/CLA as some are calling it, was just a rumor back a few months ago when we first reported about it, but as we can see in these exclusive spy-shots, it seems that Mercedes-Benz is going ahead with it’s plan to create a smaller version of legendary CLS.
It is rumored that the baby-CLS (some are even calling it the 4-door coupe version of the C-Class) will be built on the same architecture as the next-gen B-Class. Front-wheel drive will be available for the standard version, whereas the AMG version will get a all-wheel drive system.
Not much is known about the drive system, but if rumors are correct, it could come in a 1.6 and 2.0 liter engine, with 150 and 207 horsepower respectively.
We’re not exactly sure if this is a prototype version of the car being built for internal use, or if Mercedes-Benz is prepping it for the IAA in Frankfurt this September. Either way, we can certainly confirm that these spy shot, taken at the Mercedes-Benz plan in Hungary, look very much like the all-new CLS, but with smaller dimensions, hence the baby-CLS.

It will be using the B-class platform although I have no idea why. And is it slotting above the C-class or below it? If it's the latter then it will be competing with the next gen A4. And they said the AMG model will be powered by a 300+ hp turbo 4-cylinder with AWD but that will certainly be much lower than the 500 hp C63 AMG. I don't know.

This car is a great idea! There has to be a large sum of people who love the looks of the CLS, but simply can't afford one. This is the answer to that problem.
