Default Ford recalls 10,000+ 2013 Escape crossovers for brake-pedal interference issue

Ford recalls 10,000+ 2013 Escape crossovers for brake-pedal interference issue

A Ford factory employee noticed a potential issue with the carpet padding on the left side of the center console trim on the 2013 Ford Escape that has resulted in a recall of the hot-selling new crossover. If the padding gets out of position, it can push the trim piece out, reducing the clearance for the driver's feet between the accelerator and brake pedal. When the driver moves his or her foot from the accelerator and brake, it foot might hit the side of the brake pedal and increase the stopping distance.

Ford has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a full recall of all 10,000 Escape models has been initiated – that's 8,266 here in the States, a couple thousand in Canada and a couple hundred in Mexico. Owners will be notified later this month, at which time they can take their vehicles to the dealer for repair free of charge.

Default Volvo recalls 2011-2013 S80 sedans over transmission software

Volvo recalls 2011-2013 S80 sedans over transmission software

Volvo has announced the automaker is recalling certain 2011-2013 S80 models over faulty transmission software. The campaign covers a total of 1,469 vehicles, which may have a software error that could prevent the transmission from downshifting from fifth to fourth gear when it should. If that happens, the engine could stall, thereby increasing the chances of an accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Volvo will upgrade the transmission control module free of charge.

Owners can expect to be notified of the campaign on or around July 19 and may contact Volvo at 1-800-458-1552.

As you may recall, Volvo issued a recall for 2012 S80 models earlier this year for faulty wiring harnesses in the vehicles' seats. With that issue, the problem could have caused issues with the seat belt pretensioners and air bags

Default Porsche recalls select 2012 Panamera, Cayenne models over turbo fractures

Porsche recalls select 2012 Panamera, Cayenne models over turbo fractures

A potentially defective turbine wheel in the turbochargers of 2011 and 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo and Turbo S models and the 2012 Porsche Cayenne Turbo has led to a recall. There are 270 units affected among the three models, with a casting defect being cited as the cause of the trouble. The issue could lead to a fracture in the turbocharger itself, which could then lead to follow-on problems, smoke and risk of fire.

Porsche is notifying owners this month, after whcih they can take their cars to their dealers for repair free of charge.

Default 2013 Ford Escape suffers second recall this week

2013 Ford Escape suffers second recall this week

This is shaping up to be a pretty bad week for the brand spankin' new 2013 Ford Escape. Just three days ago, a recall was announced concerning a brake interference issue, and today, the Escape is under fire for, well, fire. Or at least the possibility of it.

Escape models fitted with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine are being recalled due to a faulty engine compartment fuel line which could possibly split and leak fuel. You know the natural progression from there – leaky fuel in the engine can potentially cause a fire underhood.

Ford is currently advising its owners not to drive their vehicles. The automaker is having dealerships deliver loaner vehicles to these customers and dealer representatives will transport the affected Escapes to the service bay for repair. The full repair should reportedly take about an hour to complete, depending on part availability.

Escape models fitted with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost and naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four are not affected by this recall. Ford estimates that roughly 11,500 models in North America will be recalled due to this issue, most of which are in the United States.

Heck, this hasn't even been a good week for older Escapes. 2002-2004 models are drawing new scrutiny from investigators following accusations that Ford botched a recall over an accelerator cable issue, issuing a fix that may have resulted in damaged cruise control cables. The recall happened seven years ago, and the investigation covers some 470,000 examples of the popular SUV.

Default Center for Auto Safety calls for unintended acceleration probe to Mazda Tribute

Center for Auto Safety expands call for unintended acceleration probe to Mazda Tribute

Last week, the Center for Auto Safety called on Ford to recall about 470,000 Escape utility vehicles to fix an "unintended acceleration" problem they say was caused by a previous recall repair program.

Now the CAS wants the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to include 85,000 platform-sharing 2002-2004 Mazda Tribute models that could have the same issue.

CAS says that under the 2005 recall program, the Tributes and Escapes may have suffered damage to cruise control cables that could lead to the vehicles speeding up without driver input. In a statement, Mazda said, "As always, we will cooperate fully with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in any investigation."

The CAS previously said in the initial recall, Ford had sent dealers modified repair instructions that warned of possible damage to cruise control cables. CAS, however, says Mazda did not change its instructions and that "there is no reason to believe Mazda dealers would be any better at avoiding damage to the cruise control cable than Ford dealers."

Default Honda recalls 172,200 CR-V and Acura ILX models over bum door latches

Honda recalls 172,200 CR-V and Acura ILX models over bum door latches

Ford isn't the only one having recall trouble with its crossovers this week. Honda has just announced a voluntary recall for its 2012 CR-V, as well as the 2013 Acura ILX, to correct an issue with their front door latches. According to Honda, operating the front driver or passenger inner door handle and the door locks simultaneously could disengage the handle's release cable, which in turn may result in the door not latching when closed or popping open when the door locks are used.

No accidents or injuries have been reported, but the recall casts a wide net over vehicles sold in North America and elsewhere around the world. Honda says 166,000 CR-V models and 6,200 ILX models are affected in the U.S., but Automotive News reports those numbers swell to 321,453 affected vehicles when the rest of Honda's markets around the world are taken into account.

To fix the problem, Honda will begin notifying customers in August by mail to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer where both front door latches, as well as the interior door handles in some CR-Vs, will be replaced.

inexcusable IMO....another example of simply not testing the vehicle.

Rushing to the market. That's my problem with Hyundai and the product onslaught since 2010. Only two years in, and many complaints..

Default Volkswagen recalling small number of 2012 Beetle models over tire issue

Volkswagen recalling small number of 2012 Beetle models over tire issue

Volkswagen is recalling a few 2012 Beetles for wearing the wrong tires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the summer tires "fail to comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards." The out-of-season shoes "may lead to the tires being over-loaded and/or under-inflated, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash," the NHTSA recall states.

Volkswagen says only 83 Beetles are affected and the company will replace the offending tires free of charge.

Default NHTSA probing Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ram 1500 models over safety concerns

NHTSA probing Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ram 1500 models over safety concerns

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened up investigations into more than 335,000 Chrysler Group vehicles, following reports of fires in Jeep Grand Cherokee models and rear wheel failures in the Dodge Ram 1500. According to documents posted to the NHTSA website, 106,803 Grand Cherokees and 230,000 2009-2010 Ram 1500s are being investigated.

There have been two reports of fires in the Grand Cherokee since May, and a third complaint regarding the JGC losing power steering fluid, resulting in a loss of power steering.
One of the owners whose vehicle caught fire says that he saw power steering fluid in his driveway prior to the incident. NHSTA suspects that the power steering fluid may be leaking onto hot surfaces in the engine compartment.

Additionally, NHSTA is opening up an investigation in the 2009-2010 Dodge Ram, following 12 complaints of rear differential failure, causing rear wheel lock-up.

In the 12 incidents, the common thread appears to be a loosening of the rear differential pinion nut. The majority of these complaints allege that situation resulted in the drive shaft locking up. One report claims that the driveshaft detached and punctured the fuel tank.

This report follows a successful sales month for the Grand Cherokee. June was the best month in sales for the all-road Jeep since 2005, and sales are up 38 percent for the first six months of 2012. Among Chrysler vehicles, the 75,117 units of the Grand Cherokee sold are second only to to the Ram, which sold 138,581 units in the first half of 2012.

Ford Recalls Nearly 500K Escape SUVs for Sticking Pedals

Could pretty much be a continuation from Hoovey's #139 post.

This one included 2001, one person dead, and they found a broken cable, and no witch hunt or a mob gathering from the press

http://news.yahoo.com/ford-recalls-n...opstories.html

The Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly half a million Escape model compact SUVs amid concerns over a potentially deadly problem with sticking accelerator pedals.

The new recall, which affects 2001 to 2004 models that have 3-liter, V-6 engines with cruise control or approximately 484,600 vehicles, was ordered after safety inspectors discovered the accelerator's speed control cables could become stuck on an engine cover when the pedal is almost fully depressed, according to a recall notice by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

The recall comes after ABC News' Phoenix affiliate, KNXV, launched an investigation into a Ford Escape crash that claimed the life of 17-year-old Saige Bloom. The Arizona teen lost control of her vehicle and crashed on a local road in January.

Moments before that crash, Bloom's mother, who was driving in another car behind her daughter, made frantic calls to 911 saying, "She cannot stop. We're coming to a red light and I don't know what to do for her," KNXV reported.

The younger Bloom plowed into another car and rolled three times. She later died of her injuries.

According to KNXV, an inspector hired by the Bloom family later discovered the vehicle's speed control cable had broken and become lodged under the engine cover, meaning the throttle was stuck at near full speed.

FULL COVERAGE at KNXV: ABC15 Ford Investigation

Ford spokesperson Marcey Zwiebel told ABC News that the issue does not spontaneously cause the vehicle to accelerate, but the accelerator can only get stuck after the driver has pressed the pedal all the way, or most of the way down.

Zwiebel also said that the company has only recently been able to investigate the vehicle involved in Bloom's death, but said Ford's internal investigation was not solely based on that single incident.

"We had a volume of data to review and analyze in order to ensure our investigation was thoroughly and properly implemented," Zweibel said.

In a customer information sheet, Ford said that most dealerships will not have the parts to permanently fix the problem just yet but said customers should go to their local dealership for an "interim repair, which will disable the speed control system on your vehicle to eliminate the possibility of a stuck throttle…"

"This temporary repair will allow you to continue driving your vehicle until parts for the permanent repair are available," the information sheet says.

ABC News' KNXV contributed to this report.

That's a big number. The Escape was one of the few SUVs from Ford that usually got a recommendation from CR

Default Mazda piggybacks on Ford Escape recall with 215,000 Tribute models of its own

Mazda piggybacks on Ford Escape recall with 215,000 Tribute models of its own

A day after Ford issued a recall of 485,000 Escape crossovers from its 2001-2004 model years, Mazda has reportedly issued its own for the 215,000 examples of its Tribute, the Escape's mechanical twin. While it's the same engine configuration being recalled, the 3.0-liter V6 with cruise control, there is a difference in the recalls: Mazda is recalling 2002-2006 and 2008 model year Tributes, three more years of production than the Escape (the Tribute wasn't made in 2007).

The problem is a lack of clearance between the engine cover and the cruise control cable, which can prevent the driver from letting off the throttle if the cruise control is on. The situation was caused by a repair for a different recall in 2005. Mazda says the engine cover is similar enough to warrant inclusion for all years of production it has cited. It isn't known yet if Ford will expand its own recall.

Default Hyundai recalls over 220,000 Sonata and Santa Fe models over airbag concern

Hyundai recalls over 220,000 Sonata and Santa Fe models over airbag concern

Hyundai is recalling certain Sonata and Santa Fe models due to issues with the vehicles' airbags.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, certain 2012-2013 Sonata models may have been built with side-curtain airbags that may deploy inadvertently, potentially injuring occupants and greatly reducing driver visibility. Hyundai will replace those airbags free of charge.

Meanwhile, the airbag system in certain 2007-2009 Santa Fe crossovers may not detect smaller adults in the front seats, which means they could fail to deploy in a collision. Hyundai will update the software that controls the airbag system free of charge.

All told, the recalls cover 199,118 Santa Fe models and 22,512 Sonata units. While the Sonata campaign is expected to begin next month, Hyundai hasn't supplied NHTSA with a campaign schedule as of yet.
