Default Toyota recalling 11,200 Scion iQ models over faulty passenger sensors

Toyota recalling 11,200 Scion iQ models over faulty passenger sensors

Toyota has announced a voluntary recall of 11,200 Scion iQ models from the 2012 and 2013 model years. According to the manufacturer, the problem with these pint-sized hatchbacks concerns the front passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) weight sensor cables.

The OCS sensors in the front passenger seat control the operation of things like the airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioner. In these affected models, the cables for these sensors located in the seat track can become damaged as the passenger seat slides forward and backward. And if the cables are damaged, the airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioner may not function properly.

No injuries or crashes have been reported in conjunction with this issue.

Toyota says that owners will be notified by mail beginning in early December, at which point the vehicles will be repaired – free of charge – at dealerships. The automaker has also confirmed that this recall only affects vehicles in the United States, and that no other Toyota, Lexus or Scion products are involved.

Default Chinese government getting serious about vehicle recalls

Chinese government getting serious about vehicle recalls

The Chinese government has released new regulations for vehicle recalls. According to Automotive News China, starting next year, automakers who fail to recall vehicles in a timely manner can expect to face fines between $80,000 and $160,000. That may be a small sum for an automaker, but the new regulations also allow the government to levy a fine of between one- to ten-percent of the total sales value of the recalled units.

What's more, automakers could face revocation of their production licenses if they knowingly conceal defects or refuse to stop selling faulty vehicles. Currently, automakers in China operate under guidelines enacted some six years ago. The outgoing standards only impose a tiny fine of between $1,600 and $4,800 for failing to recall vehicles. Between 2004 and 2011, manufacturers in the country recalled some 6.2 million units.

Default Select 2010-2012 Jaguar XF models recalled over fuel leak fears

Select 2010-2012 Jaguar XF models recalled over fuel leak fears

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall of 4,195 Jaguar XF models from the 2010 to 2012 model years due to potential fuel leak woes.

In its statement, NHTSA says that the affected vehicles are those "equipped with a 5.0-liter gasoline engine" – all US-spec XF models have this V8 underhood – but a spokesperson from Jaguar North America confirmed to Autoblog that this recall does, in fact, apply to both naturally aspirated and supercharged models.

According to NHTSA, "The affected vehicles may have a fuel tank fuel outlet flange that may crack." This means that fuel has the potential to leak onto the ground, and in the presence of an ignition source, catch fire.

Default Jeep recalling nearly 1M Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs over airbag fault

Jeep recalling nearly 1M Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs over airbag fault

A recall has been issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for select model year Jeep Grand Cherokee models and Liberty vehicles over airbag concerns. The recall extends to 2002-2004 Grand Cherokee and 2002-2003 Liberty models, affecting nearly a million vehicles worldwide.

The central recall issue is a faulty sensor in the airbag control module that may result in the inadvertent deployment of front or side curtain airbags while vehicle is in motion. This obviously has the potential to be quite dangerous.

Specifically, Liberty vehicles built between January 9, 2001, and March 28, 2003 are in question. As for the Grand Cherokee, potentially affected vehicles were built between February 13, 2001 and May 23, 2003. The number of recalled Jeep vehicles in the US totals 744,822, though when factoring global sales, that number swells to over 919,000.

Chrysler plans on notifying owners beginning in January. The repair program will involve installing a supplemental jumper harness to the airbag control module at no cost to the owner.

Default Mini fesses up to Countryman clutch issue, plans fix

Mini fesses up to Countryman clutch issue, plans fix

In 12 months time we had little complaints about our long-term Countryman. Save for the short range and rigid ride (thanks to the run flats), living with the R60 was painless. Except for one major design flaw of course; the clutch. In our experience, all the auxiliary components in the driveline combined with the standard MINI clutch, created a tangible lack of feel at the point of clutch engagement. In English; you would stall the thing early and often. It didn’t matter how experienced one was at rowing the gears, nothing would prepare you for how terribly the clutch engaged. And from 2012 November production onward, MINI has updated the clutch and the issue is no longer. But what about current owners with the issue? And is the Paceman affected? Read on.

For those with 2011 and 2012 cars with issue, we recommend bringing it to the attention of your dealer. And if needed, call MINI directly. We’re guessing MINI USA will handle it on a case by case basis.

Additionally MINI has applied the same fix for the Paceman.

Here’s the official statement from MINI USA:
As part of the continual refinement and optimization of MINI vehicles, we have improved the take-off convenience and performance of all our MINI Countryman clutches by implementing some software updates as well as changing the clutch facing material to improve the feeling of the clutch engagement. We are sure that these changes will even further improve the convenience of our MINI Countryman models, and will be recognized and appreciated by our customers. These changes coincide with the start of production of our MINI John Cooper Works Countryman as of November 2012.

Post Recall

Toyota Motor Corp. said it will recall about 2.77 million vehicles worldwide due to problems with the steering and the water pumps in some models. It is the automaker's 2nd multi-million car recall in 2 months.

Toyota is recalling 670,000 vehicles in the United States, 496,000 vehicles in Europe and 1.5 million vehicles in Japan over a problem in the steering intermediate extension shafts, which could be damaged at slow speed, spokesman Joichi Tachikawa said on Wednesday. This problem, seen in cars such as the 2nd-generation Prius and certain Corolla models, can be fixed in about 50 minutes, he said.

Separately, the Japanese carmaker will recall 630,000 vehicles worldwide, including 350,000 in the United States and 175,000 in Japan, to fix water pumps in hybrid vehicles, Tachikawa said.

Some vehicles are target of both recalls, making the total number of vehicles to be recalled 2.77 million, he said.

In October, Toyota said it would pull back more than 7.4 million vehicles worldwide to fix faulty power window switches, the industry's biggest single recall since Ford Motor Co. took 8 million vehicles off the road in 1996.

A series of Toyota recalls involving more than 10 million vehicles between 2009 and 2011 damaged the firm's image, but it recovered and earlier this month raised its full-year net profit forecast to $9.7 billion, citing solid sales.

Toyota has sold about 3.3 million Prius hybrid vehicles globally since the car went on sale in December 1997. The total number of hybrid vehicles it sold worldwide, including the Camry, was 4.6 million as of end-October.

This year's profit forecast comes despite a big drop in car sales in China since September, when anti-Japanese protests erupted over a diplomatic row.

Default Cadillac recalls 2013 XTS over head restraint issue

Cadillac recalls 2013 XTS over head restraint issue

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has announced a recall of more than 12,000 Cadillac XTS sedans over a head restraint issue.

General Motors is recalling 12,626 XTS models built between October 12, 2011 and August 30, 2012 over Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 202, which pertains to head restraints. Apparently, the Cadillac's rear seat headrests "may not lock in the upright position after being folded forward. If the head restraint is at its lower position and it falls forward, it will not meet the height required by the standard."

This issue could result in an increase risk of neck injuries in the event of a crash. To address this issue, Cadillac is notifying the 12,626 affected owners, and dealerships will replace the units in question with no charge to the owners

Default GM recalls select Chevy Cruze, Sonic and Buick Verano models over airbag issue

GM recalls select Chevy Cruze, Sonic and Buick Verano models over airbag issue

General Motors is recalling certain 2012 Buick Verano, Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic models due to a defect in the driver's airbag system. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the airbag has a shorting bar which may contact two internal terminals. If that happens during a crash, the supplemental restraint may not deploy, increasing the risk of driver injury. The recall includes a total of 2,949 units.

Default VW recalls 2012-2013 Beetle models with leather seats over airbags

VW recalls 2012-2013 Beetle models with leather seats over airbags

Volkswagen is recalling 2,471 Beetle models over faulty occupant control modules in the front passenger seat. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, if the seat in certain 2012 and 2013 model year vehicles gets wet, the module may malfunction and may not detect the presence of a child restraint. If that happens, the airbag will not shut off and will deploy in the event of a collision. Such a scenario could greatly increase the risk of serious child injury.

As a remedy, Volkswagen technicians will replace the control modules free of charge. The automaker hasn't released a schedule of when the recall will begin, but owners can expect to be notified of the campaign soon. You can view the official NHTSA recall notice below for more information.

Earlier this year, Volkswagen recalled 83 2012 Beetle models for being equipped with the wrong tires.

Toyota recalls 150,000 Tacoma pickup trucks

6:33PM EST November 21. 2012 - Toyota is voluntarily recalling about 150,000 Tacoma pickup trucks from the 2001 to 2004 model years to make sure the spare tire can't fall off.
Under the recall, it plans to inspect and possibly replace the spare-tire carrier assembly, the automaker announced.
The recalled vehicles were originally sold or are currently registered in 20 cold-climate states and the District of Columbia. In these vehicles, the spare tire is stored underneath the rear bed and suspended by a spare-tire carrier on a metal lift plate.
Toyota says during the manufacturing process, the spare-tire carrier lift plate may not have been sufficiently coated with phosphate. That, combined with prolonged exposure to road salt and other environmental factors, could cause corrosion of the lift plate, causing it to break and detach the spare tire from the vehicle.
In addition to the District of Columbia, the affected states include Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
Toyota said it would notify owners of the recalled vehicles in December. Dealers will inspect and replace the spare-tire carrier assembly at no cost. Owners can call Toyota at 800-331-4331 for more information.

Default Ford recalling 89k 2013 Fusion and Escape models over engine fires

Ford recalling 89k 2013 Fusion and Escape models over engine fires, urges owners to park their cars

Ford has announced a recall of 89,153 vehicles equipped with 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engines over the possibility of overheating and, in some instances, fires starting in the engine compartment. The brand new 2013 Fusion accounts for 15,833 of the affected models, the other 73,320 being the 2013 Escape. This is the fourth time the recently launched Escape has been recalled, and this is the third time the recall has involved the 1.6-liter engine.

In a statement issued Friday, Ford confirmed that there have been new reports of these engines overheating, resulting in fires while the engine is running. No injuries have been reported in conjunction with this issue, and Ford states that the affected vehicles' instrument clusters may display warning notifications reading, "Engine Power Reduced to Lower Temps" or "Engine over temp, stop safely."

Ford is currently working on a repair procedure and will notify owners as soon as a fix is found. In the meantime, the automaker is urging owners to stop driving these affected vehicles and to contact a Ford dealer to arrange for alternate transportation at no charge. Owners in the United States may call 866.436.7332 for assistance with securing a different set of wheels (888.222.7814 in Canada).

Fusion and Escape models equipped with 2.5-liter naturally aspirated and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines are not affected by this recall. The Fusion Hybrid is also not affected.

Default Honda recalls small number of 2012 Civic models for improper steering column

Honda recalls small number of 2012 Civic models for improper steering column

Honda has issued a recall of just 157 examples of the 2012 Civic due to a steering column issue. The sedans in question were built between October 26 and October 30 this year, and were fitted with the wrong steering column assembly. Because these particular columns "may not have proper energy absorbing characteristics," in the event of an accident the risk of injury is increased.

Honda is notifying owners and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that the recall is expected to begin on December 4. The affected owners will have their steering columns replaced free of charge.

Default 2013 Ford Fusion gets second recall in a week, this time for faulty headlamps

2013 Ford Fusion gets second recall in a week, this time for faulty headlamps

Ford is recalling a total of 19,106 2013 Fusion models for faulty headlights, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The car's low beam headlamp projector coating may not have cured correctly during manufacturing, which may cause haziness over time, dimming the lights. The resulting reduced visibility could cause a crash. Ford will notify affected Fusion owners, and dealers will replace the faulty lamp assemblies free of charge. Expect the recall campaign to begin on December 10.

Default 2009-2012 X5 xDrive35d recalled for problematic pulley

2009-2012 X5 xDrive35d recalled for problematic pulley

There is nothing to hate about the gobs of torque available in the diesel-powered BMW X5 xDrive35d, but the fact that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall for broken idler pulley bolts might be a bad example of the engine's strength. In addition to the recall, InsideLine is also reporting that BMW has issued stop-sale for all vehicles still in dealer inventory.

On the 29,800 diesel X5 models affected by the recall, the idler pulley bolt could back out and/or break, which would cause a loss of power steering. To repair the problem, BMW will begin notifying owners next month, and dealers will replace the bolts. For owners of the 2009 X5 xDrive35d, this comes a little more than a year after 2,120 models were recalled for a faulty fuel pre-heater.
