Recall: Chevrolet Sonic for dragging fuel tank, Camaro for peeling labels
Recall: Chevrolet Sonic for dragging fuel tank, Camaro for peeling labels
The 2013-2014 Chevrolet Camaro and Sonic are affected.
The 2013-2014 Chevrolet Camaro and Sonic are affected.
General Motors is recalling 18,941 Chevrolet Camaro coupes in the U.S. to reapply airbag warning labels on the sun visors. On some 2013 and 2014 models, the label -- required by the government to warn that children can be injured or killed by airbags -- can peel off. Dealers will reapply the labels later this month.
Also, GM is recalling 1,227 Chevrolet Sonic models from 2013 and 2014 for fuel tank support brackets that can break and cause the tank to drag on the exhaust pipe. The tank could then completely fall out of the car, which would bring obvious consequences. GM said it had no dealer or owner complaints regarding the problem after discovering it during assembly in August. Dealers will replace the problematic fuel tank bracket if needed at a date to be determined later, GM said.
Between December 2011 and January 2013, GM recalled the 2012 Sonic four times for missing brake pads, faulty airbags and windshield washer problems. The 2012 Camaro was also part of the airbag recall in January.

Chevy recalling 1,600 Sonic subcompacts over fire risk
Chevy recalling 1,600 Sonic subcompacts over fire risk
General Motors is voluntarily recalling more than 1,600 model-year 2013-2014 Chevrolet Sonic sedans and hatchbacks due to potentially faulty fuel tank strap welds, the The Detroit News reports. According to GM, "If the strap bracket separates, the fuel tank would rest on the exhaust pipe or plastic fuel tank shield, and owners may hear a rattling or scraping noise. If the fuel tank shield and fuel filler neck do not support the tank, it could separate from the car. If the tank is punctured and there is a source of ignition, a fire may occur."
GM reportedly discovered the issue at its assembly plant and does not know of any complaints, injuries or incidents resulting from the issue. Since many of the cars are still at dealerships, dealers will proactively make necessary repairs. We have yet to see an official recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, presumably since the agency has temporarily stopped issuing notices because of Washington's government shutdown

GM recalling 22K Silverado and Sierra trucks for seat issue
GM recalling 22K Silverado and Sierra trucks for seat issue
General Motors will recall 21,721 of its new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups over front seats that could move if the vehicle is hit from behind. Affected vehicles all feature manual adjustments for the two front seats, according to a report from Automotive News.
Of the nearly 22,000 vehicles covered under the action, the overwhelming majority – 18,972 -– were sold in the United States. A further 2,575 were sold in Canada, while 103 were shipped south of the border to Mexico. Finally, another 71 were sold outside North America altogether. As of right now, there are no reports of injuries due to the defect.
Naturally, Chevy and GMC dealers will make the repairs free of charge, although it's not clear as of this writing if GM will be notifying owners or just addressing the issue at the truck's first service.
This recall is notable for being the second to affect the Silverado and Sierra since their debut earlier this year. GM recalled 843 vehicles for an airbag issue over the summer. We'll update this story if an official statement becomes available from GM or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Toyota recalling 10k vehicles to fix wiper switches
Toyota recalling 10k vehicles to fix wiper switches
Toyota has announced a voluntary recall covering approximately 10,000 cars in the United States. Affected models include the 2013-14 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2013-14 Avalon and Avalon Hybrid, and the brand new 2014 Corolla.
The problem, as Toyota explains it, is that, "During manufacture of the wiper switch assembly in the involved vehicles, certain contacts on the switch terminal could have been manufactured incorrectly." This could lead to a short in the circuit when the wiper switch is moved between "off" and "mist," and thus, cause the windshield wipers to stop working. Not good.
Toyota will contact owners via first class mail, and the vehicles can be repaired at dealerships, free of charge

Harley-Davidson recalling in nearly 30,000 new hogs for clutch repair
Harley-Davidson recalling in nearly 30,000 new hogs for clutch repair
If you bought a new Harley-Davidson recently (specifically a Touring or Softail model), you may want to stop riding it for the time being, because the company has put out a recall notice on certain models.
The issue apparently involves the hydraulic clutch, which has reportedly proven difficult in certain circumstances to disengage. If you can't disengage the clutch, you could have trouble slowing down or stopping, potentially resulting in a crash. And crashes are not a good thing, especially on a motorbike.
The recall affects nearly 30,000 bikes and trikes manufactured between May 3 and October 14, 2013, and includes Touring models FLHTCU, FLHTK, FLHTP, FLHX, FLHXS, FLHTKSE and FLHRSE, and Softail models FLHTCUTG, FXSBSE and FLSTNSE. If you're riding one of those, your dealership should be calling you to advise you not to ride your bike until they can come pick it up and fix the problem, which should only take about an hour.

Toyota recalling 800k Camry, Avalon and Venza models for AC issue
Toyota recalling 800k Camry, Avalon and Venza models for AC issue
Toyota has announced plans to voluntarily recall 803,000 vehicles from model years 2012 and 2013, over concerns with the air conditioning condenser housing. The recall covers the Camry, Camry Hybrid, Avalon, Avalon Hybrid and Venza, although the exact split between affected models wasn't available.
According to Toyota, the condenser can leak onto an airbag control module, which in turn could cause a short circuit. In most cases, this will just lead to an airbag warning light, but in rarer instances, the airbags could fail to deploy or pop out of their own accord. There's also a concern over a loss of power steering if the airbag control module develops a short.
It's unclear if there have been any injuries or crashes relating to the defects. Toyota will begin informing owners of affected vehicles via first class mail, and will ask them to report to dealerships for recall work, involving the installation of a cover on the condenser housing.

870k Toyotas recalled for spider-related problem
By Peter Valdes-Dapena @peterdrives October 17, 2013: 4:26 PM ET
The Toyota Avalon is among the cars being recalled for a problem in which a blocked drainage tube could lead to an airbag deployment.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney)
Toyota is recalling 870,000 vehicles because a problem with an air conditioner part could cause airbags to deploy unnecessarily .
In some cases, the problem was caused by spiders.
Sometimes, their webs can create a blockage in a drainage tube coming from the air conditioning condenser. That can cause water to drip down onto an airbag control module, causing a short circuit. That, in turn, could cause the airbag warning light to light up on the dashboard and it could even cause the driver's side airbag to deploy, something that happens with explosive force.
In some cases, there could also be a loss of power-steering force, Toyota (TM) said.
The vehicles involved are model year 2012 and 2013 Camrys, Venzas and Avalons, including hybrid versions of those cars.
So far, Toyota is aware of three airbag deployments as a result of this and 35 cases of warning lights coming on, Toyota spokeswoman Cindy Knight said. In the cases Toyota has investigated, the only consistent cause of the blockages has been spider webs. Knight could not say if spiderwebs caused every incident, however.
Spiders sometimes build webs inside tubes in cars. In 2011, Mazda recalled 52,000 Mazda6 sedans for a problems caused by spiders building webs inside a vent line for the gasoline tank.

2009 Hyundai Genesis under investigation for brake problems
2009 Hyundai Genesis under investigation for brake problems
According to The Detroit News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into 40,000 Hyundai Genesis sedans due to reports of brake problems. All of the vehicles in this probe are from the 2009 model year.
NHTSA has reportedly received 23 complaints from owners citing increased brake pedal travel and reduced braking power, with one of the incidents resulting in a crash. The Detroit News reports that, in another incident, the Genesis driver responded to the lack of brake effectiveness by applying the parking brake, which caused the vehicle to lose control and go into a spin. Many of the complaints indicate that this problem was simply diagnosed as a faulty ABS module.
In a statement to The News, Hyundai said it is fully cooperating with NHTSA on this investigation.

Hyundai to recall 27,500 Genesis sedans over brake issue
Hyundai to recall 27,500 Genesis sedans over brake issue
Following an investigation launched by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this week, Hyundai will reportedly recall 27,500 Genesis sedans due to braking problems. Roughly 40,000 Genesis sedans from the 2009 model year were originally under investigation, but this official recall affects vehicles from 2009 to 2012.
A Hyundai spokesperson told The New York Times that brake fluid may cause the brake control unit valves to corrode, which reduces braking power. Affected cars will have their brake fluid replaced, and if necessary, will have the control unit replaced, as well.
The original NHTSA investigation was launched after the government agency received 23 complaints from owners citing reduced braking power and increased pedal travel. One incident reportedly resulted in a crash, while another caused a driver to lose control of the car.

Nissan recalling 151,000 CUVs over ABS issues
Nissan recalling 151,000 CUVs over ABS issues
Nissan will be recalling over 151,000 vehicles due to issues with the anti-lock braking systems. On rough roads, light braking in the Nissan Pathfinder, Infiniti JX35 and QX60 could trigger a problem in the brake pressure output software that might lead to longer stopping distances than expected relative to the brake inputs. Needless to say, unpredictable stopping distances on rough roads is not a desirable trait in a three-row, family friendly CUV.
The recall covers all 2013 and 2014 Nissan Pathfinders built between April 18, 2012 and September 20, 2013, some 100,682 vehicles. Another 52,629 2013 to 2014 Infiniti JX35/QX60s built between September 15, 2011 and September 20, 2013 are also part of the notice

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution recalled over clutch woes
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution recalled over clutch woes
Mitsubishi will be recalling over 10,000 Lancer Evolutions built between December 12, 2007 and March 5, 2013, covering model years 2008 to 2013. The recall only affects cars with manual transmissions, though, so if you opted for a Lancer Evo with a quick-shifting SST, this recall doesn't apply to you.
If you're one of the 10,474 people that has a Lancer Evo X GSR, which is the only way into a manual-trans Evo X, you need to plan a trip to your local dealer. The recall relates to a failure in the clutch master cylinder, making shifting in and out of gear difficult. Consequently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that this could increase the odds of crashing.
Mitsu will notify owners of the affected cars, and these Evo models will be repaired, free of charge, at dealerships. The recall is slated to begin around November 11
