VW recalling 2.64M vehicles worldwide over engine, light issues
VW recalling 2.64M vehicles worldwide over engine, light issues
Volkswagen is staging a massive, worldwide recall that's already grown from 1.68 million to 2.64 million vehicles and covers three different issues across a number of vehicles. We already reported on 61,000 Tiguans getting recalled over lighting issues - that was just in the US. Globally, however, VW will be recalling 800,000 Tiguans, according to Automotive News, with the focus on CUVs built between 2008 and 2011. The issue with the Tiguan relates to a simple fuse swap, so this is rather unremarkable, aside from the sheer number of vehicles being fixed. The real, troubling issues relate to gearboxes and pickups.
239,000 Amarok pickups (pictured right) are being recalled over fuel leaks, while 1.6 million vehicles are being recalled to swap the synthetic oil in dual-clutch transmissions with mineral oil. Now, the transmission issue is one for the global Volkswagen Group to address, not just the VW brand - vehicles from Audi, Škoda and Seat use the same seven-speed DSG and are covered under the recall, as well.
Why the switch from synthetic to mineral oil? Apparently, using the synthetic oil in a DSG and then subjecting it to stop-and-go conditions or heavy loads in a hot and humid climate can lead to electronic malfunctions, according to a Volkswagen press release. The switch, from the sounds of it, is largely a preventative measure.
That makes it no less troubling, though. With 1.6 million DSG-equipped vehicles being recalled worldwide, this is certainly a ding to the perception of Volkswagen reliability. Most troubling for the brand, though, is the distribution of the affected models. Over 640,000 units need to be recalled in China, alone, according to Bloomberg. Not only is the People's Republic hugely important to the German brand's future plans, but this latest issue marks the second time this year that there's been a six-figure recall for VW in China.

59k Chevy Malibus recalled for fire risks, faulty defrosters
59k Chevy Malibus recalled for fire risks, faulty defrosters
Chevrolet will be recalling 59,000 Malibu sedans in a pair of recalls, according to a report from Reuters. Around 15,000 cars are being recalled over concerns that a bad wiring harness could start a fire, while another 44,000 units need repairs for issues in the HVAC system.
The 15,000 Malibus being recalled over fire concerns are 2013 models fitted with the optional power front seats. According to a statement from Chevrolet, the wiring harness in the seats could fray against seat frames, which could lead to a fire. The span of time where affected cars were built isn't entirely clear, but Chevy reports that there have been no reported injuries or crashes caused by the issue.
As for the remaining 44,000 models being recalled, it applies to 2014 Malibus, which have a defective defroster in the HVAC. Rather than causing fires like the seat issue, the defroster just might not work when called upon. While a minor issue, the ability to defog the windows is important for driver visibility.
The total distribution of affected models sees 57,605 cars being recalled in the US, 1,047 in Canada and 683 in Mexico. As of this writing, there's been no word from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Hyundai recalling 15,500 Entourage minivans over rust in cold-weather states
Hyundai recalling 15,500 Entourage minivans over rust in cold-weather states
yundai has increased its quality by leaps and bounds in recent years, but we're not sure the Entourage minivan is the best representation of the brand. Essentially a rebadged version of the Kia Sedona, the Entourage has been out of production for about five years now, and it's evidently run into some trouble.
The problem apparently revolves around the suspension - specifically the front lower control arm - which could rust and fracture, particularly in snow-belt states. As a result, Hyundai and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall for the Entourage from the 2007 and 2008 model years, the only two years it was sold in the United States.
The recall applies to some 15,500 units sold or registered in Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Hyundai will notify owners as to when they should bring their vehicles in for inspection before either rustproofing or replacing the components in question. What's interesting, however, is that the nearly identical Kia Sedona has not been subject to the same recall.

2003-2004 Isuzu SUVs recalled for suspension corossion woes
2003-2004 Isuzu SUVs recalled for suspension corossion woes
Manufacturer: Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America
SUMMARY:
Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America, Inc (Isuzu) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Rodeo and Axiom, and 2003 Rodeo Sport vehicles that were originally sold in, or are currently registered in, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion near the forward mounting point bracket for the left or right rear suspension lower link.
CONSEQUENCE:
The corrosion may allow the bracket to detach from the frame, impacting vehicle handling and increasing the risk of a crash.
REMEDY:
Isuzu will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. For vehicles in which little or no corrosion is found, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. For vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the rear suspension lower link bracket and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. In the event the corrosion is so severe that the reinforcement bracket remedy would not be sufficient, Isuzu will offer to repurchase the vehicle for an amount based on the Kelley Blue Book "Private Party" price. All inspections and remedies will be provided free of charge for vehicles that are 10 years old or less. For vehicles older than 10 years, Isuzu will offer a free remedy, but only if the vehicle is presented to an Isuzu service facility dealer within 12 months of when owner notifications were issued, after that time owners will be charged for the repairs. The recall is expected to begin in mid-December 2013. Isuzu owners may contact Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

Ford recalls 7,300 Lincoln MKZ Hybrids for potential rollaway problem
Ford recalls 7,300 Lincoln MKZ Hybrids for potential rollaway problem
The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid might not be "true luxury," yet, but it is being recalled. According to The Detroit News, around 7,300 gas-electric MKZs from the 2013-2014 model years have a problem with the powertrain control module that could cause the vehicles to roll even after being put into park. The problem is that the software can sometimes allow the shift to happen even if the brake pedal isn't pushed down. No injuries have been reported, Ford said.
In a statement provided to The Detroit News, Ford said, "The vehicles may have been built with transmission range sensors that do not function properly due to a manufacturing error. As a result of this error, the powertrain control module may incorrectly assume the vehicle is in neutral and allow the transmission to shift out of park without the brake pedal applied, increasing the risk of unintended vehicle movement due to an inadvertent shift out of park."
Earlier this year, Ford recalled the non-hybrid MKZ (as well as the MKS and the MKT) for fuel leaks.

Nissan NV200 recalled over wiring harness
Nissan NV200 recalled over wiring harness
The Nissan NV200, the van that's meant to act as the backbone of the New York City taxi fleet, is being recalled. Compared to some of the recalls we've seen this year, the 2,529 NV200s needing repairs is not a particularly huge deal – but try telling that to their inconvenienced owners and drivers.
The recall affects NVs built between February 6, 2013, and August 2, 2013. The vans in question use a wiring harness near the battery that may wear through its protective covering, causing a short. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, if a short occurs, it can cause a blown fuse which will stop the fuel pump and in turn, the engine.
Nissan will be notifying owners and aims to start recall repairs by mid-December.

Dodge Dart Mopar '13 special edition recalled over airbag woes
Dodge Dart Mopar '13 special edition recalled over airbag woes
Dodge is only building 500 examples of the black-and-blue Mopar '13 Dart, but the majority of them are now being recalled. Part of the Mopar upgrade included replacing the stock seat skins in the Dart with black and blue Katzkin leather, but the seat-mounted side airbags were reinstalled improperly during the upfitting process, which could affect the performance of the front seat side airbags.
According to the official National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bulletin, a total of 374 Mopar '13 cars are being recalled due to side airbags that might not deploy in a side-impact collision. There have been no reports of the airbags not going off, but Chrysler will still need to reinstall the bags to ensure proper deployment.

McLaren recalls MP4-12C in hot-weather states over wiper woes
McLaren recalls MP4-12C in hot-weather states over wiper woes
There probably aren't many things that can ruin the experience of driving a McLaren MP4-12C, but as it turns out, the humid air of America's Southeastern states is one of those things. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a recall for 374 examples of the 2012-2014 model year MP4-12C due to a faulty wiper that could fail in muggy climates.
Moisture in the Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas air can cause the brushes in the windshield wiper motor to lock up, which would prevent the wiper from working. Needless to say, driving any car without windshield wipers – especially such a fast one during the rainy season of Florida – isn't an ideal situation. McLaren is inspecting the cars and replacing affected motors, and it is extending a lifetime warranty on the wiper motors of all MP4-12Cs not immediately affected.

Mercedes recalls 2013 SL models over airbag fault
Mercedes recalls 2013 SL models over airbag fault
Mercedes-Benz is recalling 130 SL-Class roadsters built between January 16, 2013 and April 30, 2013 over concerns that the vehicle's airbags won't fire if a very light person is in the passenger seat. The issue rests with what's called the Occupant Classification System.
The OCS is a system that figures out if there's an occupant in a seat based on the amount of weight being exerted on a sensor, and will arm or disarm the airbags accordingly. The affected models – SL550, SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG – might not detect a very light person, which could increase the chance of injury were the car to get in a wreck.
