Default Nissan recalls Juke, Infiniti M and QX for possible fuel leaks

Nissan recalls Juke, Infiniti M and QX for possible fuel leaks

Nissan North America is recalling 2011 and 2012 Nissan Juke, Infiniti M and Infiniti QX models over a fuel pressure sensor issue. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it's possible that the sensors weren't tightened properly, which could lead to the sensor coming loose over time and an increased risk of a fire due to leaking fuel.

Default Volvo recalls 2012 S60, S80, XC60 and XC70 models over wiring

Volvo recalls 2012 S60, S80, XC60 and XC70 models over wiring harness

Volvo is recalling its S60, S80, XC60 and XC70 models, all from the 2012-model-year, for an electrical system wiring harness issue. There are 17,000 cars affected by the situation, in which a harness could have been improperly attached to the front seats, resulting in a potential separation when the seat is moved. Such a separation could lead to the improper functioning of airbags and lap-belt pretensioners.

Default Toyota recalling Camry, Venza and Tacoma

Toyota recalling Camry, Venza and Tacoma

While Toyota recalls are no longer the earth-shattering news they were back in 2009, they're still news. And today's announcement certainly qualifies for the modifier "big," with nearly half a million Tacoma pickups being recalled under one campaign, and 116,000 Venza crossovers and 70,500 Camrys under another.

The 2009 Camry is the only model year covered by the recall, while 2009-2011 Venzas are affected. These vehicles may need a replacement stop lamp switch, which may have been installed incorrectly. Symptoms include warning lamps illuminating, a non-starting condition, and the inability to shift out of Park.

The Tacoma recall covers some 2005-2009 models that may need their steering wheel spiral cable assembly replaced. Symptoms include an air bag warning lamp that does not go off after the vehicle is started, which could result in the driver's air bag being deactivated.

Unhappy Toyota recalls 700,000 vehicles in US

Toyota recalls 700,000 vehicles in US

Japanese carmaker to contact owners of selected Tacoma, Camry and Venza vehicles about potential manufacturing faults

The Japanese carmaker Toyota is recalling nearly 700,000 vehicles in the US due to safety concerns, dealing another blow to its reputation following numerous recalls of faulty cars in recent years.

Thursday's announcement adds to Toyota's list of woes as it struggles to regain its poise after production was disrupted following last year's earthquake in Japan, and again in October following floods in Thailand.

Pummelled by natural disasters, Toyota has lost market share and is no longer the largest carmaker in the world – a title it grabbed from General Motors in 2008. Germany's Volkswagen also recently overtook it in Europe and GM has stormed back after its US government bailout.

Toyota's carefully cultivated image as safe and reliable has taken a beating after the recall of around 12m vehicles since 2008. The setbacks have dented public confidence and left senior management reeling with embarrassment. There were 14 separate recalls involving Toyota vehicles in 2010 alone.

The firm said the latest recalls include about 495,000 Tacoma trucks made between 2005 and 2009 that need to have their steering wheel spiral cable assemblies replaced.

The Japanese company said friction may occur in some vehicles between the assembly's spiral cable and the retainer, and over time, cut the connection to the driver's airbag.

In addition, it is recalling about 70,500 Camry sedans made during 2009 and about 116,000 Venza crossovers made between 2009/11, to replace lamp switches.

Toyota fears that during installation of the switch on one of the North American assembly lines, silicon grease may have leaked inside the component. That could cause warning lights to illuminate, keep the vehicle from starting, or prevent it from shifting out of "park".

In both recalls, Toyota said it was in the process of obtaining replacement parts. Once it does, it will notify the affected owners and replace the parts for free. Toyota said it was not aware of any accidents or injuries caused by these problems.

Despite its travails, Toyota has returned to normal production and seen a revival in its sales in the US, one of its biggest markets.

According to the latest data, Toyota's US sales increased by 12% in February from a year earlier. Analysts said the upward trend was likely to continue in the coming months despite the latest recall.

Default Jeep recalls 210K Liberty SUVs over corrosion issues

Jeep recalls 210K Liberty SUVs over corrosion issues

Chrysler has announced that it's recalling 209,724 Jeep Liberty models for lower control arms that may fracture due to rust. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration says the recall covers certain vehicles manufactured between July 3, 2003 and July 14 2005, which were originally sold or are currently registered in states with a high probability of rust.

In the right conditions, the lower control arms could rust to the point of fracture, leading to a loss of control and a potential accident. Reuters reports Chrysler is unaware of any accidents caused by the defect.

Default NHTSA probing nearly 2 million Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable models over throttles

NHTSA probing nearly 2 million Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable models over stuck throttles

According to Reuters, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has trained its gaze on nearly two million Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable models over a potential stuck throttle issue.

This past Sunday, March 11, NHTSA announced it would investigate 360,000 Taurus sedans from the 2005 and 2006 model years after the government safety regulator received 14 complaints of a stuck throttle due to cruise control cable detachment. A day later, The Detroit News reported that NHTSA has expanded its investigation to include all 2001 through 2006 Taurus and Sable models for a total of 1.92 million vehicles, and in a letter to Ford, said that it has located a total of 30 such complaints.

Reuters says at least one complaint noted that the Taurus' engine can race to 4,000 RPM after the car is shifted into Park or Neutral, and there were further complaints indicating that affected models were difficult to slow. In certain cases, the transmission had to be shifted into Neutral or the engine turned off to stop the car.

Ford is reportedly cooperating with the NHTSA probe and no recall has been announced.

Default Infiniti recalling 2003-2004 M45 sedans over potential fuel gauge issue

Infiniti recalling 2003-2004 M45 sedans over potential fuel gauge issue

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began an investigation of the 2003 and 2004 Infiniti M45 late last year over inaccurate fuel gauge readings, and now that probe has resulted in an official recall. The culprit has been identified as a faulty circuit board that causes the gauge to register more fuel in the tank than the car actually has.

According to NHTSA, Infiniti will begin notifying owners in mid-April, at which time they can take their sport sedans to the dealer to be replaced free of charge

Default Buick recalls 2012 Regal over lighting concern

Buick recalls 2012 Regal over lighting concern

General Motors is recalling 2012 model year Buick Regal sedans for, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "failing to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard number 108: lamps, reflective devices and associated equipment." Specifically (and in layman's terms), it means that the Regal's parking lamps may be defective.

Vehicles affected by this recall were built between February 22, 2011 and February 22, 2012 – a grand total of 3,633 Regals.

GM will begin notifying owners about the recall this week, and dealers will reprogram the Regal's body control module (that controls the parking lights) free of charge.

Default NHTSA closes probes into VW Passat fires, GM medium-duty trucks

NHTSA closes probes into VW Passat fires, GM medium-duty trucks

Looks like Volkswagen and General Motors can breathe a corporate sigh of relief. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has closed investigations into both companies without issuing fines or ordering a recall.

The government safety agency said it had reviewed 43 reports of engine fires in 2001-2007 VW Passat models. The turbocharged four cylinder's ignition coils apparently were the source of the blazes. We reported on the initial investigation here.

After a 19-month study, NHTSA said, "The fires observed were contained in the engine compartment and did not reach into the passenger compartment. There were no reports of crashes or personal injury in this examination. A safety-related defect has not been identified at this time."

"Safety-related defect" or not, that hardly sounds comforting for Passat owners. Might want to get that ignition coil checked out.

GM got the all clear after the NHTSA checked into cracked cooling fans on the GMT-560 series of trucks, which includes Chevrolet, GMC and Isuzu 4500 and 5000 models. NHTSA said it "remains concerned about the potential for injury," but basically couldn't find the "root cause" and that the number of complaints seems to be "small and diminishing."

Default 275,000 Subaru Forester models recalled over faulty seatbelt fears

275,000 Subaru Forester models recalled over faulty seatbelt fears

Subaru is recalling 275,000 Forester crossovers over potentially faulty rear seatbelts that may not properly allow for the secure attachment of a child restraint. The affected models are from the 2009 to 2012 model years, built between November 26, 2007 and March 13, 2012.

According to the recall summary from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automatic locking retractor in the seatbelt assemblies of the rear center seat are at fault here. Obviously, if a child restraint is not properly secured to the seatbelt anchor, this can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Default Hyundai to petition NHTSA over 2011-2012 Sonata Hybrid seatbelt recall

Hyundai to petition NHTSA over 2011-2012 Sonata Hybrid seatbelt recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a safety recall of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, but this campaign comes with a twist. NHTSA announced on its website that Sonata Hybrid models produced between December 2, 2010 and March 7, 2012 are being recalled due to a seatbelt issue. NHTSA announced that the rear center belt, which incorporates a release mechanism that detaches both the lap and shoulder portion at the lower anchor point, doesn't meet safety standards.

Of the 14,728 units potentially covered under the recall, Hyundai will repair the 1,633 Sonata Hybrid models currently sitting on dealer lots. But here is where the catch comes into play: The government agency says Hyundai plans to file a petition for a recall exemption for those vehicles already delivered to their owners because it believes the action is "inconsequential as it relates to motor vehicle safety." Hyundai will not have to send out recall notices to the 13,095 Sonata Hybrid models already on the road until after the petition has been resolved.

Default Porsche recalling 2012 911 Carrera S over possible fuel leak

Porsche recalling 2012 911 Carrera S over possible fuel leak

Porsche is recalling 1,232 examples of its new 911 Carrera S over potential fuel leaks. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing, routing of a coolant line could interfere with the fuel line, causing the latter to to become disconnected. Naturally, a loose fuel line is no small matter, as it could lead to stalling problems or even a fire.

NHTSA says the recall will begin in April, when Porsche notifies owners that they can take their coupes to the dealer to repair the issue free of charge

Default BMW recalling 1.3 million 5 and 6 Series models worldwide

BMW recalling 1.3 million 5 and 6 Series models worldwide

BMW has announced it is recalling a whopping 1.3 million 5 Series and 6 Series vehicles from the 2003 to 2010 model years. Of those, Reuters notes that some 368,000 examples were sold in the U.S. – most of them sedans like the one above.

It doesn't sound like too difficult of a problem to fix, but the automaker says the cars' battery cable covers could be incorrectly mounted. BMW says no accidents or injuries have occurred because of the issue, but there is the potential that affected models may fail to start, or worse, catch fire.

Owners will be receiving a letter soon and will be asked to visit a BMW dealer for about a 30-minute repair session.

A company spokesman tells The Wall Street Journal that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been notified. Just 9 months ago, BMW was penalized $3 million for failing to report safety defects to NHTSA quickly enough. It looks like they may have learned their lesson.

GM to recall select full-size SUVs and vans over steering issue

Recalls have been issued for four 2012-model-year General Motors products over steering-gear issues. The Chevrolet Suburban and Express and GMC Savana and Yukon XL could suffer from pitman shafts that weren't hardened properly, potentially leading to a fracture and a loss of steering. There are 6,159 vehicles involved in the recall.

Honda is recalling 554,000 crossovers to repair the low-beam headlights. The models affected are the 2002-2004 Honda CR-V (pictured above) and 2003 Pilot. A possible fault with in the headlight switch wiring could cause the low beams not to work.

We don't need to tell you why that's hazardous.

Honda will notify owners beginning in late April, at which time they can take their vehicles to dealers for repairs free of charge
