The update is that CLEAR BRA was out of the question. Not enough time.
-Is everybody serious about painters tape??? or is that an inside joke.....
I think we are going to just take the GL and hope for the best. But really, painters tape (pondering)

Out of Warranty
Josh (ArmyofOne) had good luck with a spray on temporary bra on his last vacay covering a couple thousand miles. The only caveat being to carry a can with you for touchups. Yes, the stuff is water soluble, so a heavy rain will take a good deal of it off. On your car it is a flat black rubbery-looking substance that deflects most of the damage from small stone chips while masking the paint surface from bug splats.
When you return home you can wash or peel the substance off with no apparent damage to the paint beneath. There are several products out there but the one that seems to get the most reviews is from Griot’s Garage. I think Duplicolor makes a similar product. It'll take between one and two rattle cans to do the job, and the product will last long enough for you to get tired looking at the mock-bedliner finish. At about $10/can, it sounds like a pretty good deal.

Sorry guys, I have been swamped and although I saw and read all these responses, I didn't get a chance to respond. We are leaving in an hour.

Spray Pam or WD40 on the front of the car to protect from bugs and such. It may streak and get on windshield but you'll end up washing it off anyway. Won't do much for rocks though. If in a bind, and the car is relatively clean, several layers of saran wrap over the front of the car will do you well. I say clean, cause if its too dirty, it may come off at speed. the road wrap is a great idea, but saran wrap works just as well. Just don't wrap the grill!

...and that is exactly what i did.
We are back from our trip and I am happy to report that the GL did not endure any rock chips!!
Few things I did different from any other time we took a long trip:
-did not drive faster than 80. In fact most of the time I was hovering around 75.
-if i could not stay in the right lane, i kept at least 4 car lengths or more.
-my suv was superman and 18wheelers were kryptonite. Nuff said
-when stopped for gas ($93), I cleaned the bugs splatter off.
-when we reached AZ, I cleaned the bug splatter and was relieved to see no rock chips.
-same rinse and repeat when driving back. No rocknchips but bug splatter.
- the bug tar remover and microfiber cloth was mandatory.
-the suv will take a bath this weekend then I'll post some pix.
Thanks for the tips guys....thank god I didn't put painter tape and seran wrap on it...the 115 degree weather would've made that a permanent fixture on the paint
