Default Taking a BRAND New car for a 800 miles trip through the desert

Ok....

So I have a dilemma. I have another thread about me purchasing a 2011 loaded to the teeth Mercedes Benz GL450. We love the car.

Problem:

we are going to Phoenix this weekend and might NOT end up taking the GL (which I really want to) but the ole' trusty GS.

Big concern is the ROCKS, BUGS and other crap splatting and hitting the beautiful white paint while we take the 800 mile roundtrip from SOCAL to PHX and back.

I thought about a car bra *shudder* but was wondering what else I can do, if I can, to cover the front and take the trip on my new wheels???

Any thoughts?

Blue painters tape!

IMO, you bought the car to drive it, did you not? 800 miles is a long drive, make the drive in the spacious, comfy GL.

I have a white LS and it no problem with the bugs. All you need to do is get some bug and tar remover from the auto section at any store and it comes off like magic. I have made 2 trips to LA and back to Phoenix in the last 2 months and my car is cleaner than 99.99% of the members here. I am a detail freak. It will be fine

congrats on the new ride by the way

I agree with I8ABMR. We have a Starfire Pearl (white) and took it on a 2400 mile trip to FL a week after we got it. Recently returned from a 4000 mile trip to AZ, NM etc. (too far!). Both times no problems at all except for some bug removal while detailing the car when we got home.

I figure we got the car to drive and expect to do a little clean up after a trip.

I took a brand new CRV on a 1000 mile trip north, great way to get to know the car. As for bugs, bug and tar remover from any store worked great, and frequent washes. good luck

I agree, the long trips are really what I look forward to . I love my car so much and feel lucky to be able to travel long distances at high levels of comfort and luxury. My LS is quiet, comfortable, smooth, and covers miles at high speeds comfortably. These luxury cars are made for traveling and traveling is the best way to enjoy them and get to know them

Yeah, buy a pack of microfiber towels, a bottle of bug and tar remover, and a bottle of quick detailing spray and you should be all set for the whole trip!

It's going to get messy eventually... you can't avoid it forever. I'd say go for it and enjoy.

Blue painters tape! I covered the front end of my IS when i drove it from socal to norcal and back and i was so happy i did it. There was so much crap all over the tape and you could see where little rocks had hit the tape and chipped away at it. Glad i minimized the damage!

Get the front covered in 3M clear bra, other then that just drive it, enjoy it, odds are if you could afford a 2011 MB GL, your gonna eventually buy another new cars in a couple years and start the cycle over

I usually just wax the front and try not to tailgate, when I get to my destination I wipe it down, Im past the point were paint chips and splattered bugs bother me

The clear bra is a no brainer. I would make sure you have that before you go on a trip but after that its as simple as using the bug and tar remover to clean the bumper when you get to your destination and when you get home.
