85 speed limit is only on those country roads out in the boonies, they wont be near the major cities.

Even if the speed limit was 90 I would still drive 80, that is my comfortable speed

The current speed limit on I-10 from just west of San Antonio to El Paso is 80 mph, and I travel this segment very frequently. As usual I set my cruise control at 80 mph, and LOL I get passed-by by just about everybody including 18 wheelers. It should be noted that the traffic volume on this segment can be described as very light at best.

That picture looks fake. It looks photoshopped.

An area that would be great for an 80+mph speed limit would be the I-5 north of the Grapevine where its all flat and you're driving through agriculture fields.

Yes, I was being facetious. But L.A., like my own D.C. area, does have a reputation for a lot of bumper-to-bumper traffic. An 85-MPH speed limit for SoCal would not be of much use if you get in your car and creep along most of the time in gridlock.

Just got this from another Texan:

Well I would not speed up yet because the chances of it happening are slim at best.
All that has happened at this point is TX-DOT will study rural roadways for a possible increase to 75mph.
85 mph on select interstate sections has been mentioned but it is not even under study at this time.
2009 is the latest statistics available and they are grim.
Texas ranks 6th in traffic deaths on rural, non-interstate roads and 1st on all roads.
Texas had a fatality rate of 2.82 deaths for every 100 million miles traveled.
Everyone else .89 fatalities.
Of the 3,071 deaths in 2009 1,490 were on rural roads.

The new state law that went into effect 9/1 allows TX-DOT to create a 75 mph speed limit on "any state highway found to be reasonable and safe through a speed study." It will be 2013 before the study is completed, consultants have not even been hired as of yet.
The night time and truck speed limits sign removal contracts have been awarded and it is expected their removal will be complete by years end.

Whit

we probably have the most roads despite the size of our state so that statistic doesnt means little, and we probably have the most rural road mileage out of all the states. So its not surprise we are gonna be high on the list. Texas is very very large and mostly not populated.

If somehow you can attribute these deaths to the speed limit, then those statistics would be relevant to the discussion. A good chunk of national deaths are on rural roads so I dont see how Texas is any different. Rural roads are very dark, unmarked, and remote, hence the much greater risk.

Yes!!! There's never any traffic there and most people are driving at least 80MPH on that freeway anyways. CHP loves to cite people on the I-5. It would be nice to be able to go 80 at least and not worry about being pulled over

With the amount of stupid drivers here in L.A., I would be a little worried about having 85MPH as the new limit. Although, everyone does seem to drive around 65-80MPH if there's no traffic (one big IF).
