Exclamation 85 MPH New Speed Limit in Texas.

The new just went into effect today in the State of Texas. Also same speed limits for the trucks and no lower limits for night driving. Law finally catching up with reality on the freeways.

Time to plan a road trip soon on I-10 from west of San Antonio to El Paso!!!!!

I love Texas! No state income. Cheap yearly auto registration/smog(compare to Cali. i've lived in Orange County from 1981-1989) Low cost of living.

It is rare we can drive 65 on the freeways in Ca., we would need more space and fewer people.

I am still waiting for 100 mph / 160 kph. Probably will never see that ever happen here though.

What road will have 85mph? Prob in the middle of nowhere. I know that today, they lifted the night speed limit but i'm not so sure if they have implemented the 85mph speed limit. I know that the House approved for the Texas Transportation Dept to set (increase) speed limit up to 85mph...but they are still debating on "what" the speed limit would be. I think they are planning to increase it to 75mph or so...They need data/studies...As of now, I think the "legal" speed limit is still 70mph in certain roads.

Cops routinely allowed 85 MPH on many Texas highways (up to 10 MPH over the legal speed limit). I wonder if the legal bump to 85 MPH will also bump the "de facto" speed limit to 90 or 95 MPH.

The northeast is stuck at 65 MPH, even on wide open, low traffic highways. I doubt we'll ever see a bump.

Even though I like fast driving, I think 85 opens up some problems. Everyone knows that you go at least 10 mph over the limit. That means 95 mph flow of traffic.

And people will probably be texting at 95 mph.

Fast is fine, if you're truly a good driver. It works in Germany because they are heavily trained before getting their licenses. In America, you drive around a city block and you're handed a license. Half the idiots I see on the road I sure as hell don't want to see going 95 mph.

This is great news. In Az the limits are 75 mph outside the city. The federal speed limit was not what AZ wanted so if you get pulled over going 10 or 15 over they just give you a "wasting finite resources" ticket for 25 bucks and its done

that is true.. some of the idiots i see on the road cant even drive at speeds of 45mph let alone 85. i would be a bit scared to get on the freeway if the speed limit were to increase.

I've always loved driving in Texas. Took a road trip through there and it was awesome being able to drive 80 without having to worry about being pulled over Surprisingly, i didn't see that many people going over 80MPH, though if you do drive below 75 people will tail gate the hell out of you lol

There is no "de facto" speed limit. In reality, a cop can pull you over for anything over the speed limit if he/she sees fit. In most cases they are looking for those going 10mph+ over the speed limit, but they can get you for anything over. My GF got a ticket for 72mph in a 65mph zone. lol
