Default Toyota Repossesses Murdered Woman's Car

A bit of bad PR for Toyota on their Facebook page:

Watch the video in the article, it sums it up.

Well, if money is still owed on a car, or if the bank (or auto manufacturer) still has the title to it, the fact that his mother has passed away does not automatically give her son ownership of the vehicle....unless she stated it in a will. Toyota was probably within its legal rights, but, I agree, handled the situation rather poorly, especially conerning the stress and grief that was already probably going through that young man's life after his mother's murder.

If the car is under a lien (car note), the car is ultimately not her's. It's the bank's.

Yes, it sucks. But people are currently losing homes, much less cars, due to common unfortunate circumstances.

People make a big deal on a lot of things.

They just tend to forget about their debts, contracts signed, the law, fact-vs-opinion, deadlines, personal responsibility, and general common sense.

Although what Toyota did was probably within their legal rights, i think you have to take situations like this a little differently. The son should have been able to get the car out of impound, and they should have worked with him on getting back what was owed on the car. If, within a reasonable time limit, payments had not been made they should have made the call to repossess the car. I know some people have gone 90 days without making a payment before their car is repossessed, waiting would have saved them from this PR issue that is no doubt costing Toyota more than if they had just worked something out. I'm sure her son was going to make the payment.

Just goes to show the power of social media too! lol

This is an old story..

But did anybody see the name of the author? Talk about unfortunate irony.

I see Toyota let the son to contiune paying off the car by paying the $1,000 (impound fees + monthly payment). What did this due want??? Toyota paid the impound yard to get the car back which this dude would have to pay. Toyota actually save him few buck by checkin-out early from the impound.

The son said he will pay whatover the outstanding payment but now he want the car for free??? What is wrong with people nowaday???
