Arrow Toyota Coupe Range Expanding (Supra Rumors)

Toyota was once an automaker known for its 2-door sportscars and coupes. There was the Celica. There was the Supra. There was the Lexus SC. But while those have all long since departed, the Japanese auto giant is clawing its way back to the territory it once owned.

The Lexus LFA is one heck of a 1st salvo, and the FT-86 is around the corner. There's a world of space between those models, though, and according to the latest reports, Toyota is planning to fill that space, too.

Rumor has it that, while not officially sanctioned, a team of engineers is working on a rear-drive successor to the Supra, though where the project stands and what future it may have remain big question marks. A 2nd front-drive luxury hybrid coupe is also tipped to be in the works from Lexus, adopting much of its underpinnings from the CT200h.

Before those arrive, though, we look upwards to the LFA. The convertible version has reportedly been postponed if not axed entirely, but word has it that a special edition is to be presented at and named for the Tokyo Motor Show. The model would reportedly be distinguished by bare carbon-fiber panels for the roof and spoiler and a significant price premium over the stock model.

Lexus to launch super LFA Tokyo Edition, plus new Supra underway

By Tim Pollard

Lexus will launch an LFA Tokyo Motor Show Edition at this autumn's 2011 Japanese show, CAR has discovered - and we can expect a brace of additional new Toyota/Lexus performance cars in the coming years, including a likely Supra replacement.

The Lexus LFA Tokyo edition will bring an M3-esque exposed carbon roof and (still hydraulically adjustable) carbon rear spoiler. Presumably this just means the weave is exposed, as the LFA is already made from carbonfibre.

CAR understands the LFA Tokyo will cost about €40k more than a 'regular' Lexus LFA.

What else is planned for the Lexus LFA?

A spider roadster was planned and its carbonfibre construction meant the open-top LFA was nearly as rigid as the coupe. But our sources in Japan have confirmed the roadster LFA has been canned owing to the economic uncertainty in markets around the world.

And what's this about new performance cars from Toyota/Lexus?

Toyota is working on two other performance cars separate from the FT-86 and LFA projects.

Information is sketchy at this point, but CAR understands one is a front-wheel drive car (possibly a go-faster CT200h) and one is a potential successor to the Supra.

Officially, a Supra replacement is denied. But we hear a skunkworks, unofficial project is underway to replace the RWD coupe and some insiders predict a 2014 launch.

It also sounds like future fast Toyota/Lexus models will switch from high-revving naturally aspirated engines - as in the LFA, ISF and FT-86 - to smaller, turbocharged engines. Interesting times at Toyota, as it attempts to play catch-up after a decade away from the performance heartland.

my goodness, i would think the lfa roadster would attract more buyers. that would be so cool!

so they do indeed plan for more lfa (outside of the 500) with exposed cf roof? interesting

We've been saying for years this is what Toyota/Lexus needs to be doing. It's about time! The Celica and Supra are sure winners if done right. Same with an SC. These cars have very positive pasts and are easy to capitalize on.
But will believe it all when it finally debuts.

What would be interesting is if someone in N.A could get their hands on the Tokyo Edition. Would be fun to have the LFA with RHD.

I'm thinking the Tokyo Edition will either be a post-production add-on (retrofit) or they haven't sold all 500 units yet and are trying to move some by means of a special edition. The Nurburgring Edition is part of the original 500 units.

Or perhaps all 500 have been sold and the Tokyo Edition was already planned. And some buyers were also given the choice to purchase the Tokyo Edition instead of a Nur or normal LFA but weren't allowed to tell the public about the option.

Or this entire article is BS except for the already existent LFA and soon to be produced FT86 because let's face it, the Supra has been rumored since before it was completely axed.

I'm not sure what's worse: Supra rumors or NSX/Acura V8 rumors.
