It's sad and sometimes cruel..........but that's how it is. If you pay these workers any higher, then company takes a hit because labor cost becomes too expensive. In the point of view of the company, it's either you deal with it...........otherwise the company move somewhere and take away your jobs in the process.

The main goal of any business is profit. And contrary to what many socialists and commie douchebags tell you, that's just how it is because you are a corporate entity and your main purpose is not to give free jobs, make love and spread world peace.

Point is, if you want higher pay, then get a degree. Never waste the opportunity for tertiary level education.

I think the UAW needs to learn a lesson. It's just absurd to witness a situation where a blue collar earns more than a white collar. Such heresy will only jeopardize the future of the American automobile manufacturing sector.

P.S.
@spwolf

A slightly similar situation is happening in Greece. EU and IMF propose austerity measures and cost-cutting. Now, instead of accepting them and dealing with it, locals went to the streets in a riot and destroyed property and created unnecessary chaos.

This is when socialism back fires on you

So what's the cost of living in Chattanooga compared other states? $2k can go a long way in some states. Not well off but comfortable.

To the OP's opening comments about the lackluster Jetta selling well. I too have seen tons of these things recently. A conservatively designed German sedan that is under 20k is appealing to young adults. I live next to a college and this car is all over the place.

Good, you cant expect much more for putting in screw a in hole b. No skill required and the pay reflects that.

Henry Ford stated he wanted his workers to make enough money so they could afford what they built. Companies need to see the VALUE in people and stop treating them like they are expendable turds. Why do so many people hate other people? People are your most valuable resource. Porsche's ex CEO felt his workers were his most valuable people, then customers, then shareholders. Clearly their idea of things works.

Some people just want to be good workers with a good job. Not everyone aspires to be Steve Jobs. VW is not some broke company, they are financially healthy. They have plants all over the world and they decided to build a plant here to save money and to sell de-contented cars here to save money. Not every worker is lazy and wants to screw the system over. Why do people have such negative attitudes towards auto workers?

FYI a family of 4 at 24k a year is pretty much poverty level.

Don't many realize that paying people **** wages means they can't afford to spend which means the recession continues.

I find it rather disturbing the trend online and in person for people to just crap on other Americans & we are Americans.
Eloquently stated by you. Unfortunately many of the above points are lost on some people. I'm not exactly sure why a blue collar employee or "lowly" factory worker doesn't deserve the right to earn a comfortable living and actually support their family with a real salary. It doesn't matter which side of the aisle you vote on, it should be common knowledge that people can only spend what they have. For any economy to truly thrive the disparity between rich and middle class, never mind poor should not be as wide as it has become.

This whole concept of "global competitiveness" is nonsense. If US workers are going to get paid wages similar to workers in China or Mexico, then cost of living needs to be at the same level as well. In the US you can barely survive on $10 per hour, while in very many countries you can live very well on $5 per hour.

If we're going to have a "global economy" then we need to have a global currency as well, with balanced purchasing power across the borders.

While discipline is severe for Volkswagen employees, Aerotek contractors have it even worse. “If you're five or six minutes late within your first week or two, you’re done.” said Josh. “If you call out a day within your first month and a half, you’re out,” he said.
i dont see a problem with this. imo this is the way it should be.

also what are the requirements for a factory worker? i mean can high school drop out obtain a job at these places?

VW doesn't owe anybody anything. If you don't like the pay structure, don't work there.

It's sad that people are struggling in today's economy. But I think part of that is the result of the growing sense of entitlement people had developed over the past several decades.

America is a bunch of complainers, plain and simple. People all over the world would give their left ******** to have the problems we have. $12 is more than most people make in one day in the Philippines. While the purchasing power of $12 is greater there than it is here, their standard of living is much lower. I'd like to see any one of those workers have to live through what a filipino lives through and THEN try to complain.

Also, the Filipino's have an amazing attitude btw.

i think you just answered your own question. it doesnt matter if you make $0.75/hr or $12/hr, if it doesnt keep up with the cost of living then your going to struggle.

Ok, so America should become a third world country and have third world problems then, right?

I'm not saying that at all. I'm just saying that we still have it relatively good here. I don't think we should downgrade our quality of life here. I'm just saying that we need to stop and look at just how good we have it.

I think it has a lot to do with the cost of living. I don't know what it is in Chatanooga, TN but it's a lot less than what it is in California, New York or any other state where the cost of living is higher than most places in the country.

From the article, it sounds like there are plenty of people willing to work at what they are offering to pay. $12-14/hour may not sound like a lot, but it's a job in this economy. When the economy picks up, then VW will have harder time finding qualified workers and then they'll probably have to raise wages.

Sadly, it's an employers market right now and they know it. I'm all for people earning a living wage, but times are what they are.
