Default Hyundai to debut new 10-speed automatic in 2014?

It’s only been a few months since Hyundai unveiled its new eight-speed automatic transmission in the updated Genesis sedan. Now the automaker is wasting no time in improving on that gearbox by two cogs.

According to our insider sources at Bloomberg, Hyundai and Kia are working together to develop a new 10-speed automatic transmission, which could be ready by 2014. Hyundai Motor Group president Park Seong Hyon said the new gearbox will likely be used in the Genesis and Equus sedans.

Earlier this year Hyundai introduced a new, eight-speed transmission that was developed in-house. The gearbox was installed in the updated 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan, which also received a tweaked 3.8-liter, direct-injected V-6-engine. The combination is good for 333 hp, 291 lb-ft of torque, and improved fuel efficiency: 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg compared to 18/27 in the outgoing V-6 and six-speed automatic powertrain. The ten-speed gearbox should improve numbers all around.

It will also be interesting how Hyundai and Kia’s competitors will follow. Lexus was the first automaker to offer an eight-speed automatic, which debuted in its flagship LS sedan. Audi also offers an eight-speed automatic (sourced from ZF) in a number of its vehicles including the A7 and A8. Will Hyundai and Kia be the first in the world with a 10-speed? Stay tuned to find out.

I think this is just stupid. It'll have just as many gears as some semi trucks.

If it makes the car better, than why the heck not.

And it will get annoying as hell after awhile. The gears will be super short and you'll probably be in 5th by 60.

doesnt make sense... there are already 2 overdrive ratios in current 8 speeds.

I would only be impressed if three of those gears are for reverse.

Not to mention the expected life of the automatic-clutches in the transmission with all that up-and-down shifting.

Might as well use a CVT...it will give you the same benefits as a transmission with that many speeds.......without excessive wear on the internal clutches.

naysayers said it when we went from 4 to 5 to 6 to 7 to 8 gears so not surprised the reaction is negative again.

engines are most efficient generally in a very small operating rpm range. a cvt is ideal for being efficient in theory for the engine, but the cvt itself can incur power loss so a mixed bag. a conventional auto with loads of gears has the potential to be really efficient.

Nice, innovation only moves the industry forward!

But...I would love to see the repair bill for a rebuild on one of these more complex transmissions lol.

Exaggerated increases of of transmission gears/gearbox speeds = the latest ****-measuring activity in the automobile world

It seems inevitable

P.S.
As what mmarshall (and even I have been saying all along), if you're into this kind of numbers game, then why not go into CVT?

Infinite gears/speeds + with their infinite ratios = INFINITE COMBINATIONS!!!

More does not mean better. The transmission may be too weak to handle high torque engines. More complexity, more chances of breaking.
