Bimmers have always been sorta plain looking. Bangle breathed some stylish life into them. People complained (even though the cars sold well) and they went back to plain Jane-ness. I was expecting the new 3 to get plainer and it is.

Love the new interior. Looks to be of very high quality and great style. The exterior looks quite good too, better than the current sedan for sure. The benchmark of the segment will continue its dominance on its merit alone, before even taking cheap leases and badge factor into account.

Exterior is a slight improvement, but it looks like a 5 Series and 7 Series too much. BMW and Audi are closely following the "1 sausage 3 lengths" styling theme. Out of the Germans, only Mercedes is actually differentiating their sedans while still keeping family styling cues.
Interior does look like a step back. Those seats look VERY cheap, shame on BMW.

Styling is definitely out of the evolutionary playbook. It now looks like a smaller 5 which looks like a smaller 7. Anyway, the 3 has always been more about the drive than the styling and it's there where competitors need to be afraid. The current car is a target few, if any, have ever hit. It will probably be more of the same with this one.
