Thanks.
The Aveo's top-line version DID have impressive wood-tone and interior/exterior fit/finish, but was otherwise not much more than ho-hum at best. (and the base-model was as stark as a military vehicle).
Totally agree.
True, but most of the interior surfaces, though grainy for a nice-look, are hard plastic.
The 6-speed auto is available on both versions, but you have to get the turbo for the 6MT.
the Sonic is miles ahead of the "pathetic" Aveo.
As for the interior (referencing the pic below), I'm not a fan of the design layout and much prefer two analog gauges than a tach and single digital speedometer.
Materials seem very good for a car of this class, and personally I'm loving the two tone color in this cabin. The saddle and black dash and aluminum center stack blend beautifully IMO. And if my eyes don't deceive me, I think I see saddle colored stitching in the seats .
I really like the new 1.4L I4 Turbo that they are implementing, and 6-speed manual/auto transmission options are great offerings. Wish the Fiesta and Focus offered a 6-speed manual (albeit the ST versions may have them) as well as the Yaris and Fit, but I digress. Definitely interesting in a comparo between Ecotec and EcoBoost in the future!

Many people, though, especially younger males, simply prefer monotone black....it seems to be one of the "in" things now with car-fashion. I'm not one of them, though....to me, an all-black interior is like being in a coal mine.

The outgoing Aveo, of course, had a more-conventional dash/gauge-set-up, but the Sonic seems to be aimed at a somewhat younger crowd. And the Honda Civic also uses an analog-type tach and high-mounted digital speedometer.

The standard engine has more spunk, though, than I was expecting...especially compared to the slug-like Aveo. The turbo, at least on paper, doesn't seem to offer that much more, though we won't know for sure without sampling it.

I plan to review a new Impreza ASAP.......I have CL-member-requests for it, and, of course, I'm a Subie fan myself. They keep pushing the U.S.-market release-date back, though, because of the earthquake,....the last I heard, it is now late November or December.

Sure...anytime.
Inspite of the traditional Toyota/Honda reliability, my guess is that the Sonic will pick up at least some of some of the Yaris/Fit sales...the Yaris, because of that awkward center-dash gauge stack, and the Fit, because of its insect-like front-end styling.
I'm not really a fan of the rear end, but i think the interior is decent, price is low, should sell pretty good.
