Honda fêtes million-mile Accord driver with surprise parade, new model

There's nothing quite like a parade in small-town America. The floats made by kids at the local high school. The middle school's marching band. The people on stilts. The new Honda.

Joe LoCicero gets a key from Miss MaineWait, what? Well this was no ordinary parade. Sure, it had all those things, but the occasion wasn't Thanksgiving or Memorial Day. It was another milestone altogether: Joe LoCicero hit one million miles on his 1990 Honda Accord.

It's been an event that people (well, other people, anyway) have been monitoring on millionmilejoe.com. You see, while the average driver clocks around 14,000 miles on the odometer every year, LoCicero does more than four times that. He started keeping track when he reached 300,000 miles, so when he hit the big seven digits, it was a cause for celebration.

So Joe's town of Saco, Maine, put together a surprise parade, complete with an airplane banner and a float with a giant odometer made up of six people spinning giant hamster wheels. And at the end, Miss Maine herself gave Joe the keys to a brand-new 2012 Accord, courtesy of American Honda. Nice work if you can get it.

Wow. Cool that he was able to hit 1M miles with his Accord. It took him 21 years to do it and he got a brand new Accord for it.

I also could have hit 1M miles with my ES 300 but she died prematurely in a rear-ended collision...oh well.

Kudos to Joe's town and to Honda, very classy! That is how you show someone appreciation. Honda and the town should teach a damn class!

Hah I may not care much for their current portfolio, but a good thing like this deserves much respect and kudos. Good job Honda!

Good stuff! I remember when was at around 750k. Nice to see him hit 7 digits!

Hopefully he keeps going with it! lol and very good gesture by American Honda offering him a free Honda Accord! He no doubt brought some good publicity for Honda!

What is amazing is my Honda/Acura is only 2 years newer than his 90, but he has reached 1 million and I just barely have 50K. I'm pretty sure my car will never reach 1million miles in its lifetime.

I think Honda did something really positive on this one and giving the guy a free Accord.

It's all good imho

I love stories like this. This is something the average Joe can relate to. They could easily do a short 30-second commercial showing the parade.

The average distance between Earth and the moon is 240,000 miles. This guy could have made two round trips, drive around the Earth's equator, and still have miles to spare

That's incredible considering the wear the engine goes through.
