After owning a G35 as much as i loved it i wouldn't go down that road again... mustangs are too common for me...supras are too much work but worth it, m3's are nice but are getting out of date and are money pits, GTO's are nice but they won't give you that "excitement" that you would want, is350 is not really considered to me as sport to my definition ( raw driving feel) so that leaves the s2000... it's light, has no roof, manual, revs to 8k, all a good formula to enjoy driving which is what i would be looking for in a sports car, but that is just what i would want...SO if you want high hp GTO is the way... practicality is350.... balanced fun car s2k...fun project car supra...

05-06 goats are pretty reliable cars from my research. Those LSx motors are pretty durable and that's why so many people are swapping them into foreign and domestic cars.
The e46 m3 is a great car, but not the most comfortable. They provide great drivers feedback but the ride can be harsh and and a bit punishing. Maintenance is very expensive for these cars. I'm talking about $100 oil changes DIY cause they require "special" oil that you can't find at your local wal-mart or auto stores. The car needs some special tools to work on and really is high maintenance. I had to buy some more tools aside from my basic tools just to do oil changes and to clean the maf. Car also requires valve adjustments every 60k so if you have some mechanic skills, you should be fine.
I've driven a 06 gto and that car pulls hard! It's also very comfortable as well. Once you driven it, you might see past its plain look and actually appreciate it's low profile exterior. Only the dual hood scoops and dual exhaust will give it a more aggressive loo, but even then, it won't shout out "look at me". IMO, the gto feels like a 400hp Lexus SC with a more aggressive exhaust rumble.
The C5 z06 is great for comfort, speed, and handling but the interior reminds me of some of GM's truck. The quality is not the best but it's not that bad either. For the $20k price range, I can't think of a car that can compare with the C5 z06 unless you need a 4-5 seater.
I've owned a s2000 before and like the m3, you have to rev the car higher to get to it's power range. The s2k is not a comfortable car and jumping to a s2k from a lexus, the s2k is loud and rides rough, but handles very well.
Make a list of the cars that fits your needs and then test drive them. Hope you find your car.
