Default What are some Legitimately good Radar Detectors?

I've always wondered about these and I figure they might be a good investment if they actually work. Anyone have any ideas?

I have an Escort Passport IQ -

http://www.escortradar.com/iq/

Best thing i've ever spent a dime on and it has saved me probably upwards of $10,000.

Highly reccomend any radar detector from Escort

I've owned a Cobra something, an Escort 8500 X50, and the Escort 9500ci. Both Escorts have been absolutely fantastic, but be aware that they cost significantly more than most other brands. I have the 9500ci in my IS350 and I love it.

+1 for Valentine One (also the Escort is good as well) -- but personally I like to know where the radar is coming from which is what the Valentine One shows. Well worth it.

What are some Legitimately good Radar Detectors?
Probably few or none, if the cops use Instant-on-Radar, Laser, or VASCAR (many jurisdictions do).

And, though this probably won't affect you guys much in the Midwest and out West, the use of (but not simple posession of) radar-detectors is illegal in VA and DC. Cops have the legal authority to impound them if they are caught in use...and they have "detector-detectors" that can tell if you are actually using one.

I have 2 Valentine 1s (one in the Vette and one in the GS4) and an Escort 8500 x50 in the TT Stealth. I prefer the V1s but the Escort has saved me before, too.

Valentine One FTW!!! Saved my *** sooooooo many times

Just don't forget that it only detects the usual radar signals. It won't do anything for you if the cop is pacing you or you fly by a cop who doesn't have his radar on at the moment or is using laser instead to clock you. No radar detector is 100%, just remember. lol

jmsharp02 - was gonna say only 2 good brands - valentine and escort, but as you can see, all the posts support this.

valentine MIGHT be slightly more sensitive and gives control freaks arrows to look at and escort has other tech like gps tracking of speed traps, and such.

i use an escort solo 2 these days. it's battery or cord, and i use eneloop rechargeables that last about 3-4 months between recharges. i've had others before - they've all saved me thousands. a no brainer for everyone, not just speed demons. speed traps are the new tax collection. they like to sit right inside 35 limit areas right after the limit was 45 or 55 so it's easy to catch people. everyone on fl interstates does 80 while the limit is 70, so they can catch people all day long if they want. so because i end up either speeding to go with the flow, or have people riding my rear bumper because i'm at the limit, it's a no win, so the detector at least alerts me to the tax collectors.

I have a Valentine One hardwired in my X5 and I can't count how many times it's saved my ***. I strongly recommend it.
