Our Dodge minivan has six cupholders (plus four in the aftermarket console), and three juice box holders in the center and rear seats. With this capacity for liquid refreshment, you'd think they'd include a porta-potty too.

In general, there is no set answer (German-designed vehicles, for instances, resisted the tendency to install them for years after other automakers did). In general, though, for the American market, demand for cupholders increased with the advent of the Starbucks coffee-chain and the growing level of impaitience and a fast-paced life among drivers, many of who simply could not (or would not) wait until they got to the office for a cup of coffee. The popuarity of minivans also increased the demand for cupholders, so kiddies could drink their fruit-juice or Big Gulps while riding in back.
