My brother had a mini cooper 2 a few years ago. Was great for him for the year he owned it although he only put on about 12k miles before totaling it. It held its value really well, insurance only took off $1,000 off the price he paid. But he really regretted not choosing the 135i, which he could of bought since the cooper s with the extended warranty came in at just about $30k.

I'm no Mini fan, but I have a friend with a 2007 S and he's never had a problem.

I had a used 2008 Mini Cooper S with sports package -- initially I loved the car...BUT a BIG +1 on the rattle trap...it drove me nuts; ride is pretty punishing too (I owned 3 vettes that were nowhere near this rough riding).

I did get pretty good MPG with it...mid 30's...but you have to TRY...you can't drive like an azz and expect to get 35mpg (with any car).

It sounds like you and I had the exact same experiences with Mini. Mine had so many rattles that I was embarrassed to take anyone else for a ride. Also, the ride was much worse than a Corvette, or any other car I have ever driven. I also only averaged 20-22 mpg in mixed driving.
