Volvo V40 debuts first pedestrian airbag [video]
One one hand, really good idea but on the other hand what is next?
Volvo introduced the world's first pedestrian airbag on the V40 five-door hatchback last week at the Geneva Motor Show.
As part of the IntelliSafe suite of safety technology available on the V40, the pedestrian airbag uses sensors in the front bumper to detect contact between the car and the pedestrian. As a result, the rear end of the hood is released and at the same time elevated by the deploying airbag. The inflated airbag covers the area under the raised bonnet plus approximately one third of the windscreen area and the lower part of the A-pillar.
Other IntelliSafe safety and support systems also featured on the V40 include Lane Keeping Aid with haptic auto steering, Park Assist Pilot, automatic Road Sign Information, Active High Beam and a Cross Traffic Alert radar system at the rear. Other features also include Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake and City Safety low-speed collision avoidance system which operates at speeds up to 31 mph.

I don't think the problem is with the bumpers, the hood, or the airbags...the problem lies with the law and people's perceptions/attitudes!
A person can be walking along with their iPod in their ears, cranked up to 11 and, without looking, walk into the street (outside the crosswalk and against the crossing lights, of course) and, if they're hit by a car...it's the DRIVER OF THE CAR'S fault.
Pedestrians have the right-of-way...always and forever.
Here in the DC area, if you try to drive downtown, by the George Washington University campus, the attitude is absolutely insane.
People routinely cross the road without looking, against the lights...and they'll give you dirty looks, even yell at you...because you had the audacity to try to drive in the middle of the road that they're walking across! How dare you!
New Law: If you cross against the light, or outside of a crosswalk, it's the pedestian's fault. Once the pedestrian gets out of the hospital, they're responsible for any damage they cause to my car. If they don't survive, this liabilty gets passed to their estate or their immediate family.
I'm a 2,000 lb. car...you're a 180 lb. person. This is not a fight you can win. You will lose...every...single...time.

Agreed ^^^
I think the money spent on this technology is pretty stupid. Is it that tough to teach people to watch where the F they're walking??? If you walk into traffic with your phone/ipod... you pretty much deserve it.
Then if you're not dead the repair bill for the car should come out of your pocket.
The airbag seems pretty pointless anyway... the main impact is to the legs/hips. I know, just make the front clips of cars out of Jello! Then you'll have a snack before the ambulance arrives.

Volvo's pedestrian airbags may already be on their way out
Volvo's pedestrian airbags may already be on their way out
As proof of just how quickly automotive technology can advance, just check out the Volvo V40. Developed with an external airbag aimed at better protecting pedestrians in the event of a collision, this innovative safety device could be phased out soon in place of more advanced active safety technologies like pedestrian detection and auto braking.
Go Auto had a chance to talk to Volvo senior VP Lex Kerssmakers at the Tokyo Motor Show, and he suggested that the V40's under-hood airbag will not be used on the next-gen XC90 and might not even be continued on non-SUV models. The passive airbag was designed to deploy at speeds of less than 31 miles per hour to help limit head injuries to pedestrians, but new active technologies are designed to prevent collisions in the first place.

New 345HP Volvo V40 T5 HPC Study by Heico Sportiv Eyes Mercedes A45 AMG and Audi S3
Click here to view more photos
Volvo's feisty performance partner Heico Sportiv has turned the wick on the Swedish brand's V40 with the presentation of a new concept that may soon be offered to European buyers. It is named the V40 T5 HPC, which is an abbreviation for "High Performance Concept".
Heico states that it is "world’s most powerful Volvo V40" adding that the hatchback's "350 hp, 4-wheel drive and extremely dynamic driving characteristics are the ingredients that make the sporty compact car an interesting alternative to the Audi S3 Sportback, BMW M135i xDrive and Mercedes A45 AMG."
Built around the standard V40 Cross Country T5 that sports a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-five with 251hp (254PS) and all-wheel drive, Heico revamps the turbocharger, exhaust system (including sport catalytic converter and flap control), intercooler and charge-air system to boost output to 316hp (320PS), and when the water-ethanol injection system is activated, to as much as 345hp (350PS). Peak torque is lifted from 360Nm (265 lb-ft) to 510Nm (376 lb-ft).
With the automated gearbox, the V40 T5 HPC accelerates to 100 km/h (62mph) in 5.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 265 km/h (165mph).
Other improvements over the regular model include a 30mm lowered sports suspension, a six-piston sport brake system with bigger discs, new 235/35R19 ContiForceContact cup tires shod in lightweight 19-inch alloys and a selection of aero parts on the outside, while the interior is upgraded with new sport leather seats (Recaros up front) and Alcantara trim with contrast green stitches.
“While the S80 HPC was purely a concept car, the V40 HPC has been designed as a series-producible vehicle, with approval for normal roads and for everyday use,” said Heico Sportiv General Manager, Holger Hedtke. “The HPC combines HEICO SPORTIV’s Volvo V40 individualization program with a number of specially developed high-performance components.”

Volvo V40 May be Headed to America After All
Think the Volvo V40 belongs in the U.S. market? Tassos Panas, the head of marketing and product development at Volvo Cars of North America, agrees with you.
Volvo U.S. execs are pushing the Swedish automaker to bring the V40 to America, but the five-door hatch isn’t homologated for the U.S. But that won’t be stopping Panas from trying to make it happen.
For over a year, Volvo U.S. and its dealers worked on persuading executives at Volvo to bring the V60 station wagon to America. That ended up working, as the V60 will debut early next year for the U.S.
In Europe, the V40 replaces the V50 station wagon and the S40 sedan. The stylish hatchback is available with a range of six engines: three gasoline, three diesel. It currently uses a platform from Ford, but the next-generation model will use a modular compact platform that’s being jointly developed with Volvo’s new owners, Geely. The next-generation V40 isn’t due for another four to five years.

Volvo's U.S. Arm Pressing Swedish Execs to Bring V40 to North America
Here's an odd twist to a story we originally thought was over; when Volvo presented the new V40 last year, North American officials told Carscoops that the company had no plans to sell it on this side of the Atlantic because, "sales data and our continued market analysis confirm that demand for a five-door hatchback like the V40 would not be strong enough to warrant bringing it to the United States".
A year and a half later, another Volvo executive, Tassos Panas, head of marketing and product development at Volvo Cars of North America, told Autonews that he will join the brand's U.S. dealers and press executives in Sweden to reverse that decision!
"The V40 is a great small vehicle, and we would love to have it here," Panas told the news site. "It is not currently in our plan but that does not stop me. I am constantly talking about making that a reality."
Panas added that one of the main problems in importing the V40 compact hatch is that it is not homologated for the United States: "That is one of the significant hurdles," he said.
We don't know how the V40 story will pan out, but it's worth mentioning that Volvo's U.S. division recently managed to change minds in Sweden and convince the company's executives to bring the larger V60 station wagon to the States, with sales due to begin next year.
In Europe, the V40 is positioned against an array of premium compact hatchbacks, including the Lexus CT, BMW 1-Series, Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class, while Volvo also offers a crossover version of the car named the V40 Cross Country.

Heico Sportiv Turns Volvo V40 Cross Country Into XC40
Volvo's crossover and SUV range comprises the more subtle Cross Country and the more rugged XC editions. For the V40 hatch, the Swedes applied the lighter Cross Country treatment, but the brand's tuning partner Heico Sportiv, has come up with a new package to give the five-door model an XC look and feel.
Currently in the development phase, Heico Sportiv released a digitally-made photo of their V40 Cross Country (CC) XC package, which on the outside, includes broader fenders with or without mudguards, bigger wheels and a raised suspension.
The 8-piece polyurethane fender extensions are attached to the body with 3M adhesive tape to "avoid all cutting and drilling of the body", according to Heico, and will be optionally available with black textured paint to match the bumpers. The re-tuned suspension with different shock absorbers and springs lifts the body by 30mm.
In addition, owners can get Heico's performance kit that increases the output of the D3 engine from 150PS (148hp) to 195PS (192hp) and the T5 from 254PS (251hp) to 268PS (264hp), as well as brand new paddle shifters for automatic models with series-manufactured paddle shifters, optionally in anodized silver or HEICO blue.
