Teen girls twice as likely to use cell phones while driving as teen boys

Research by the American Automobile Association's Foundation for Traffic Safety has revealed teenage girls are twice as likely as their male counterparts to use devices like cell phones while driving. The study used video taken of young drivers while they were behind the wheel to determine how teenagers engage in distracted driving. While talking on the phone and texting ranked among the highest sources of distraction, personal grooming and reaching for objects in the vehicle also played significant roles. Outside of using electronic devices, AAA found teens were distracted around 15 percent of the time while behind the wheel.

Girls were also found to be 10 percent more likely than their male counterparts to be engaged in other distracted driving activities. AAA found the young ladies to be 50 percent more likely to attempt to reach for something in the vehicle and 25 percent more like to eat while operating a vehicle.

Of course, driving with passengers in the vehicle also contributed to distraction, while having a parent or adult in the vehicle caused rates of distracting behavior to fall off. Shocking stuff we know.

Makes sense from my personal observations. Should be outlawed. I refuse to read or answer texts while I'm driving, and while I rarely ever talk on the phone while driving, I think I'm going to stop that as well.

Texting is illegal here in Georgia but it's not enforced. I get close calls at least 3 or 4 times a week from some moron that is holding their phone in front of them. I'll only text if I'm stopped at a red light or if I'm sitting in gridlock and I'll only take calls through the BlueTooth setup.

The irony is I was against that "no texting while driving law" when it was first enacted. Now I want them to ban all non-hands free phone use.

Yup, last accident I was in (about 8 years ago) was caused by a 17 year old girl, talking on her cellphone, making a U-turn from the right hand lane. I was overtaking her in the left hand lane at about 20mph (housing development) and she just started the turn right in front of me. I had about .5 secs to react and jammed on my brakes but ended up taking out the right rear fender on her parents minivan. The look on her face was priceless - wide open mouth of horror along with the cellphone pressed up against her right ear.

The issue I consistantly see with cell phone users/texters is driving too slow because they aren't paying attention. Nothing is more annoying when this happens in the number one lane and traffic can't get around.

Yeah, and once they use their cellphones, they become emotionally compromised...

I don't know any guys that got in a car accident while using the phone.

I know plenty of girls that did though.

I would have to agree that its mostly women and girls I see texting. I usually honk, give them the finger, and floor it !! I dont stand for that crap. If I see them on the phone and holding everyone up I love to make them uncomfortable and expose their stupidity. I must admit I have seen a lot of cops talking on the phone when driving their patrol cars.

I don't want to offend any girls or ladies here in the forum, but it's probably not surprising that teen-age girls yak and text on the road more than boys. From what I've seen and heard, they yak and gossip more to each other even when off the phone.
