Default Ferdinand Alexander Porsche died today at 76

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/04/05/f...1-dies-at-age/

Porsche has announced that Ferdinand Alexander Porsche – grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, son of Ferry Porsche and designer of the iconic 911 – passed away today, April 5, at the age of 76. He died in Salzburg, Austria of unknown causes.

It goes without saying that the 911 is the most important product in the history of Porsche, and it's a testament to Ferdinand Alexander's skill as a designer that his original shape has evolved so little since 1963 when it debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The 911, though, isn't his only achievement. He was also reportedly very proud of another car he designed, the 904, as well as founding the industrial design company Porsche Design Studio in 1972.

RIP, Ferdinand. A great auto designer...the industry will miss him.

....And a perfect example of what I've been saying for years...that styling doesn't have to "catch up" or change just for the sake of change's sake. I don't necessarily believe in the idea of "outdated" looks. The popularity of a number of retro-designs today, like the PT Cruiser, Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, VW Beetle, and, of course, the 911, prove it.

Grandaddy Dr. Ferdinand rolled over in his grave when the Cayenne came out; his son Ferry rolled over when the Panamera sedan came out....now let's see if grandson Ferdinand Alexander will roll over if Porsche does a minivan.

RIP...Ferdinand you may be gone, but the 911 design will never die. I was thinking of my Sc400 when you made this comment...

With the aging of the important figures that have made the world as we know it in the last 100 years or so, the great leaders of each industry continue to pass. We can only hope the ones who replace them are even half as good.

I think the new 911 shows that the design can be fresh and timeless at the same time.
