That will do nothing if you do your own maintenance and don't bring your car into the dealer often. Someone can easily roll back the odometer before service.

And thanks for the link. I edited my link.

I know of two guys who can turn back mileage for $500-$1000.
Can't trust any vehicle today.Especially lease turn ins.
Service records can help.
Carfax and I believe Autocheck has them.

Isn't this why we have autocheck and carfax? You can clearly see if it's been done or not especially with a car that has had compliant readings throughout it's lifetime.

My friend was over the mileage allowance on his MB lease. He took it to the dealership's body shop to have some cosmetic work done before turning in the car. The service advisor noticed that he was over the mileage, and gave him the contact info for a guy who would roll back the odometer for $400.

I always check the carfax and I always have the service advisor run the VIN to make sure the car had been serviced regularly. When I bought my LS my SA told me that the car was from Nebraska, was serviced every 5k miles at Lexus of Omaha, and that the guy had the TSIB for the brake actuator done. It was great. You have to be careful but i the end if the car car be researched, maintenance records evaluated, and anxiety can be reduced. I purchased my GS350 brand new and in the end the depreciation was insane . At least when you buy the car a couple of years old you let someone else take the hit and you can drive a more expensive and nicer car, I have gone both routes but I think I will try a couple more CPO/previously owned cars.........as long as I can closely research them

Just have to do your homework. I would never take anyone's word on "lady driven", "senior's car" or "highway miles". If there isnt proof to back it up, in my opinion it probably is not true.

Always have to do a VIN check, CarFax and Autocheck. It doesn't take much effort to call up the DMV and run the VIN. Especially in other states it may have been registered. You never know if there is a lein on the VIN. You can check the mileage at each inspection time on Carfax.

It's not as easy, anymore, as you would think. Long-gone are the days when speedometers and odometers ran on housed mechancal cables to the transmission, and all you had to do was disconnect one end and hook up a power-drill-bit.
Today's primary gauges, even those with analog-faces, are generally electronic, and not easily tampered with.

Mike, these guys do digital odometers and I know they've used what ever computer/tool for at least 3 years.
Someone i know had his leased vehicle's mileage turned back 2-3 years ago..
It's only a matter of time before the crooks come up up with something and they have for today's digital odometers.

Don't get me wrong. I know today's systems aren't necessarily foolproof and that some guys can beat them. It's just a lot harder than back in the days of the drill and a couple of wrenches, that's all. CarFax and computerized service-records, as others have noted, also help.

You will need to do your research prior to buying a used car. Don't let some incident like this defer you from looking at use one. There's a lot of nice use cars if you done your homework.
