there is a chassis regidity kit out there. while the car is on the hoist, get a mech to inspect the rear subframe for cracks.
i use to work for bmw. e46s have come down in price as there are a lot more jobber parts for them.
if u plan on getting one, some noted items to keep an eye out for are also the front thrust bushings, ccvv crankcase vent valve aka the fu fu valve. bad gas milage, running poorly, and cel usually are the first signs, also when the car starts making a fuu fuu sound rear sub frame.
other than that, pretty solid cars.
note and point, good advise from a service advisor and tech, always factor in, up to 10% of the cost of the car goes to maintenance. so if the cars gonna cost $100,000, expect u can possibly pay up to 10,000 a year in maintenance.

Sorry but I am just not a fan of BMW's!!! The interiors have always looked cheap with all the plastic panels that they use. Things might have got better in recent years but they are still way over priced for repairs.
I like the color of the rims but it just reminds me of Civics with goofy colored rims!!!
