Porsche plans E-Class competitor, codename Pajun

German car magazine Auto Bild reports Porsche is planning build a sedan that will slot below the Panamera and compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Citing no sources (so a grain of salt is recommended), the magazine claims the four-door, codenamed Pajun, will cost no less than $84,000 and be ready for production no later than 2017.

In September 2011, Car claimed the Pajun could spawn coupe, convertible and even a shooting brake variant. Back then, rumors swirled about powertrain options that included a 550-horsepower V6, 600-hp V8, plug-in hybrid and an Audi-sourced diesel.

Hopefully, Porsche is also working expeditiously to find a better name than Pajun, which in Korea is a seafood pancake, in Finnish it means willow, and, according to Google's translation, in Welsh it means – wait for it – Cajun. That's the name Porsche was using to refer to its smaller-than-Cayenne SUV before changing it to Macan in February. Clever coincidence.

I think I would like to check out one of the Porsche sedans ( plural with this one released). My LS is great but I want more. The Porches are supposed to be very very highly ranked for reliability.

Only if it doesn't use a VW engine.

Doesn't this also compete with their very own A6 too? I guess they'll eventually also be making a C class / 3 Series fighter too.

If a midsize sedan does come to fruition, I'd say the smart money is on a 3.6L V6 from the panamera and cayenne (rather than a flat six sourced from 911, boxster, cayman). A slew of 4.8L V8's in NA and FI trims, possible hybrid, and even possibly a 2.0L I4 turbo (most likely from VW/Audi) on base applications

Most certainly any midsize luxury(sport) sedan. Not necessarily a bad thing to have a 3-series fighting Porsche. Might finally be the one that dethrones the little guy

I've head about this for awhile and it can be fantastic but there is no doubt VW is pushing Porsche for more volume and more sharing.

I don't think people really understand how Porsche is the new luxury brand to worry about.

My neighbor back home in NY has a Cayenne Turbo, every 20k is when he takes it in, noting wrong no problems, he loves it

Im pretty sure Porsche reliability is OK, but since their owners are rich and know how to take care of a car, Porsche gets a huge boost in reliability.

Proper maintenance goes a long way.
