Tesla Model S officially rated at 89 MPGe with 265-mile range

The numbers are in, and they're looking good. According to the EPA, the Tesla Model S gets a miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) rating of 89 (combined), 88 (city) and 90 (highway). MPGe is defined as the distance a vehicle would travel on the energy contained in one gallon of gasoline, though of course the Model S runs on electrons, not gas.

To compare, other pure electric cars on the market include the Honda Fit at 118 combined MPGe, the Mitsubishi i with 112 MPGe, the Ford Focus Electric with 105 MPGe and the Nissan Leaf with "just" 99 MPGe. Even at the bottom of this particular list, these are impressive numbers for the Model S, meaning it makes efficient use of the energy available in its battery.

Tesla says the range has been declared to be 265 miles using the EPA's five-cycle testing procedure, which makes it the long-range mileage champ of the production electric car world. Using the EPA's older two-cycle testing protocol, the Model S would score more than 300 miles per charge – significantly greater than the 244 miles managed by the older Tesla Roadster. Still, that range figure only applies to the top-of-the-line version with the 85-kWh battery that starts at $69,900. There will be Model S sedans available with considerably less range and a smaller price tag, as well as a Performance model starting at $84,900.

Lol, lol, MPGe...the stupidest thing government has came up with since FEMA.

If you factor in the amount of coal it takes to burn just to make enough electricity to charge that thing you are already like -50 mpg. And that's not even accounting for the pollution it takes to charge it up (8+ hours everyday) versus the couple hourse of driving. A gas engine only makes co2 when the engine is on, after all.

Good numbers.

For a big car that seats seven, that's impressive. And if the Leaf is $40k with 80 mile range, and the Electric Rav4 is $50k with a 90 mile range, I'd probably just pay the premium and go with the Tesla if I was in the market for an electric car...

Nice looking and good range! Pricing is pretty good too.

Only thing is the front reminded me Hyundai Genesis coupe.

Tesla has a store at Bellevue Mall and I had a look at one up close. From a presentation standpoint I'm extremely impressed. The giant center screen console is absolutely dazzling. Great seats, great steering wheel, very refined feel to everything. LED external lighting is stunning. Love the fact it has trunks both at front and rear. Truly a car of the future... hopefully production cars will stand up a lot better than the Fisker Karma has so far.

And refining gasoline consumes air and love not coal.

good to know someone on CL got a close look at it. Impressive numbers too, so the initial deposit for the buyers wasn't in vain afterall.

HAHAHAHHAHA!!!! Love this reply!!!! Pwned!!!!

website to calculate how clean your electric car actually is.....I just wish they had a comparison calculation versus a gas powered car including:
drilling for the crude
refining
transportation to storage tanks
transportation to gas stations
actual tailpipe emissions

And Who said gasoline engine is emission free? Nobody. Except the tree hugging ignorants that thinks electric car is.

And no, refining gas only consumes puppies, which I am fine with.

i hate the huge touchscreen thats in the cabin replacing the whole center console
there is no tactile feedback on buttons and volume control anymore
i can see accidents happening a lot more because of that screen

but yes, the numbers are good
but how long does it take to charge the 85 kWh model on a 240v rapid charging station?

.. I dunno... design looks a little outdated already. Something about it reminds me of a Mazda 6.. Cool tech though.
