Nissan Z Concept Coming; Production Car Could Reach 500 Horsepower - Car and Driver
It has been more than eight years since the current Nissan 370Z went on sale, but Nissan’s legendary Z-car soon will get its long-awaited redesign. The first major step will be taken at the Tokyo auto show this fall, where Nissan will reveal the next-generation Z concept, a preview of the production car said to offer several potent powertrains.
As this artist’s impression from Japan’s Best Car magazine shows, it is expected that the new Z concept and production car will have similar proportions to the outgoing coupe. The Z will also adopt an edgier styling language, including a gaping front end that takes cues from the latest GT-R facelift, and will ride on a shorter wheelbase courtesy of the Infiniti Q60’s FR-L platform.
Of the three powertrains on offer, the flagship twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, borrowed from the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport, is said to punch out a healthy 400 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 350 lb-ft of torque at 1600 rpm; it will be mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. If this version lives up to those expectations, it could put the Nissan toe to toe with rivals such as Porsche’s 718 Boxster S and BMW’s M2.
In addition to the entry-level 3.0-liter V-6, generating 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft, we also hear that Nissan is working on a hybridized model to be introduced later that could make the Z the most powerful in its class. It is expected to employ the same 3.0-liter V-6, teamed with a dual-clutch gearbox and an electric motor producing as much as 160 horses. One source told us that this model’s total output could reach an eye-popping 500 horsepower. The new Z is expected to land in showrooms by 2019, with the base model priced in the low-$30,000 range and the twin-turbo nearing $50K.

Good news on the 6 cylinders and high hp, seems like it will now be a pretty legitimate Corvette competitor this time. Glad they are going that direction over some rumors of sticking a lame 4 cyl in it and making it a lower end car which would not work especially with 6 and 8 cyl muscle cars doing so well and priced in the 20's and 30's.

One feature I liked on the current Z (and we'll see if they keep it on the new version) is the rev-matched downshifts for the manual transmission without having to double-clutch or use the heel-and-toe method, both of which can be awkward if you are not skilled at it.

My first car out of college was a 93 300zxTT and I loved it. I never warmed up to the new Z even though they went back to their roots with this car. The Z32 competed with some of the best at that time and you can't say the same about the new Z. I guess that's what the GTR is for but the GTR never looked as good as the 300ZX. If the new Supra takes the same approach as the Z did, it will be disappointing as well and I won't even consider buying one. My old SupraTT was probably my favorite car I owned followed by my 300ZX.

The GTR is a bad *** car and everything but when it comes to looks, it's not the best there is out there. Don't get me wrong, it looks aggressive and awesome but the 300zx back in its days 27 years ago looked amazing! Even now, to this day, people ask me if my 300zx is a new car

I would call the GTR looks polarizing. Personally I like the looks, if I didn't I wouldn't be on my second one. I just don't believe it looks like a $100k car. Put it next to other cars with similar performance like the Viper, Z06 or PorscheTT and it just looks so bulky and not sleek at all. I drove by my wife yesterday in my GTR on a 25mph road and waved to her and she didn't see me. I called her and asked how she couldn't have seen me and her response was that it is not like the GTR stands out that she would have noticed LOL. While the Z32 is dated now, in its time it looked great and I don't think it's looks were as polarizing.

when i got up close to an lfa a while back, there were also a couple of GTRs in the parking lot. sorry, but the GTR looked bulky, kinda cheap, and not so great after seeing the awesome LFA.
