Thumbs up Track Pack: Chevrolet 2013 Camaro 1LE

--sorry report from Hoovey...plz delete

There’s little new in the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro press art file – in fact, most photos of the Camaro V-6, Camaro SS, and Camaro ZL1 are carried over unchanged from last year – save for one exception: the track oriented 2013 Camaro 1LE package.

While these images are new, the 1LE package isn’t exactly breaking news. General Motors first announced the package – available only on Camaro SS models equipped with a manual transmission – back in March. Although it’s not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, the 1LE is to the Camaro SS what the Boss 302 is to the Ford Mustang GT: a way of improving the muscle car’s handling prowess on the track.

Ticking the 1LE package – or the “SS Performance Package,” as Chevy’s marketing staff calls it – doesn’t affect output of the 426-hp, 6.2-liter V-8, but it does throw some new hardware at the chassis. Camaro 1LE models gain a bespoke FE6 suspension package, which consists of thicker front and rear sway bars (27- and 28 mm, respectively), a strut tower brace, and toe links, rear shock mounts, and wheel bearings borrowed from the supercharged Camaro ZL1. 1LE models also receive unique monotube dampers, upgraded half shafts, 20-inch wheels shod in sticky Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar rubber.

But wait, there’s more. The 1LE package also throws in a 3.91:1 rear axle ratio, and a revised close-ratio version of the existing Tremec six-speed manual. The transmission also gains a cooler, while GM adds a high-flow fuel pump – important, considering the automaker says the car can pull 1 g in cornering.

Cosmetically, Camaro 1LE models stand out from the crowd thanks to a black finish applied to both the ZL1-esque wheels, and the entire hood surface itself. Inside, 1LE cars receive microsuede accents on both the steering wheel and shift ****, yet another cue cribbed from its big brother, the ZL1.

Though we now have photos of the finished product, we still don’t have finalized pricing for the 2013 Camaro 1LE. At its announcement, Chevy promised the completed package should retail below the $40,000 mark. The package is available on either the 1SS or 2SS trim levels, which presently run $33,180 and $36,780, respectively.
