for them to change perception the formula is easy. Produce class leading cars for about 10% - 15% less than the competition and you will have a winner. Oh yeah , dont forget the reliability .

#1 maybe in 40 years. Competition is far stronger than Cadillac and retro styling is going to continue to hold them back. None of the leaders in the sedan catagories use retro as their main recipe.

Does Cadillac want to be #1 in sales? That would be difficult, I think, given Cadillac’s very limited number of models compared to its rivals.

Cadillac now has a compact model – the ATS – to compete with the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Lexus IS. Cadillac has a mid-size model (CTS) to compete against the A6, 5-Series, E-Class and Lexus GS. Cadillac also has a new full-size model (XTS) but as a transverse-engined FWD/AWD car, can it really compete with the A8, 7-Series, S-Class and LS?

But Cadillac (and Lexus) is missing a compact coupe to go against the A5, 3-Series coupe and C-Class coupe.

Cadillac is missing the fuller range of SUVs/CUVs, with 1 CUV (SRX) and 1 SUV (Escalade) to compete against the countless models that Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus have.

Cadillac is also missing all the sub-compact/compact/mid-size entry-level models that its competitors have (A3, 1-Series, A- and B-Class, CTh and ES).

Cadillac could easily re-badge some Chevrolet and Vauxhall models but then we could be back to the badge-engineering / Cimarron era again. Those re-badged models just may not be judged as “true” Cadillacs. GM could also fold Buick into Cadillac and fill in some of the missing holes in Cadillac’s range that way but it seems that GM is not willing to do that.

The Escalades burn too much gas so a comfy barge with a modern V6 could be a good thing for going to and from the airport

Easy, simple solution. Do the same thing with the ATS that they did with the CTS. The CTS wagon, IMO, is one of the best-looking wagons on the road today.

Absolutely.......don't kid yourself. There are a lot of folks out there (mainly older ones) who are p***ed-off about the Town Car's demise. It was a major error for Lincoln (though their execs refuse to admit it)...and Lincoln sales are suffering as a result. That's one reason why (along with Mercury's demise) that a lot of Lincoln sales had to be integrated into existing Ford dealerships.

Agreed. And one thing that today's luxury-car designers have to learn is that comfort is not necessarily sport-suspensions and low-profile tires. One thing that consistantly sold the Town Car and Cadillac DTS was their soft ride-comfort......something that their replacements, with their admittedly better handling, simply can't match.

Interestingly (though it might be slightly off-topic), one of he biggest blocks of GM stock, today, belongs to, of all things, the UAW itself. The union put up the second-largest bloc of bailout-money (behind the Federal Goverment and taxpayers) to rescue and reorganize GM...technically even more, when you factor in the pay and benefit-cuts that many UAW employees had to take.
