help pick my bro-in-law's next car!
hey guys,
so my brother in law is finally going to get a new car after driving a honda accord for the last 15years (the same one).
he briefly owned a BMW Z3 but the cost and frequency of required maintenance led him to sell it.
he's looking for a fun to drive sporty car under 30K.
he doesn't really care about image or anything like that he just wants something fun to drive that will last a long time and will have minimal cost of ownership.
fuel economy is also a priority.
oh ya and he prefers a manual transmission.
any suggestions?

If he really wants something responsive and fun to drive, I'd look first at a Mazda Miata. But I'd skip the folding-hardtop option, though.............the standard flip-ragttop is so simple and easy to use that the power-motors, IMO, are only necessary for those with arm, hand, or shoulder problems.
If your friend is a big guy, though, make sure he can fit in a Miata. Though the 3Gen models are notably roomier than the 1 and 2Gen models, they are still generally unsuited for NBA-size guys. They are also, for several reasons, generally unsuitable for long-trips and high-speed cruising.
Yes, the FRS and BRZ would also be a consideration, but they are (as of now) just too hard to get. Not enough of them are currently being built, they are strictly allocated at the dealerships (a couple a month at the most), and it's a seller's market, with likely price-markups, on the deal. Subaru shops can charge pretty much what they want; Scion shops are restricted by the list-price selling of company-policy, but can add extra-cost dealer/factoy-approvedt accessories to bump the price up.
