House Republicans urge White House to delay 2017-2025 fuel economy standards
Representatives from the Republican Party have asked President Obama to delay pushing through strict new automotive fuel economy regulations. The trio of top GOP legislators consists of auto dealer Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania, Jim Jordan (also of PA) and House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa of California (pictured). The three legislators are calling for further review of the 2017-2025 Corporate Average Fuel Economy targets. According to a report by The Detroit News, Issa says "Higher fuel efficiency standards is a goal I share – but not at the expense of consumer safety."
As the report notes, a deal was struck last summer that would actually lower fuel economy increases from 2017-2021 of 3.5 percent annually for light trucks and five percent every year for cars. Part of this pact stipulated a mid-term review to confirm that reaching these goals was even possible.
The National High Traffic Safety Administration, along with the Environmental Protection Agency decided not to meet a self-imposed Wednesday deadline for finalization of the new rules. NHTSA head David Strickland has said that the new regulations will be announced in "days, not weeks," while one House Republican has suggested that the White House may be having misgivings about pushing the legislation through now.
It is said that the new standards will cost the auto industry $157.3 billion, but could eventually result in $1.7 trillion in savings for consumers on fuel expenditures. Unfortunately, the new standards could also mean an additional $2,000 to the price of the average automobile by 2025. According to Representative Kelly, "the new CAFE standards will limit choice, compromise safety, and increase costs to millions of Americans..."
The issue may be out of their control, however, as Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood noted in a recent interview that the legislation is "... coming soon. We're working with the White House and the EPA to roll it out."

Wow! Just wow how BS like this can fly!
Oil industry and head people in it are the reason number one why this world hasn't progressed in last couple of decades and automobile industry together with this gentlemen that has feces coming out of his mouth are contributing to it everyday.
Ok even if it will cost consumer $2000 more, savings in fuel consumption will most likely make it even and in the end you use less fossil oil. By 2025 gas prices will most likely go way up so MPG would not matter anyway, I do not doubt oil companies have this planned out as well to make up their losses due to less oil usage.
Why are we still driving oil powered cars and why we would be driving them in next couple of decades is a question for another time.

We cannot just keep raising up the FE standard every year. It needs to stop at one point. You cannot have more than 100% efficiency from gasoline engine. It is theoretically impossible.

A balance needs to be found. I like that the new FE standards are finally bringing a lot of new technologies onto the market, but it does make cars more expensive. Continually increasing the standards is just going to make it ridiculous eventually.

how the hell do these politicians know what mpg is economically feasible? They arent engineers. The same people that can barely mail you a letter through the post office. Yet people look to the govt to pull random FE numbers out of their ***. THey have this retarded equation using the wheelbase to calculate the regulated mpg. Guess what the equation is more advantageous towards trucks and disadvantageous towards sports cars. Who knows maybe manufacturers will make long wheelbase cars so they can juice this equation. Its completely ridiculous.

What are these bums NOT against?
Odd we heard the same story about 35 MPG and look today. We have never had better
Vehicles with better MPG. Prices did not skyrocket and people are buying them and it's not just hybrids!! From SUVs to V-8s to trucks to small cars due to influence from the government most of these companies have made some brilliant new fuel efficient vehicles.
Look at how many 30 and 40 MPG vehicle we have now!

why does the first sentence say "at the expense of consumer safety" when the rest of the article talks about just raised costs?
If you make the legislation pass, the car makers will find a way -- this is a great way to challenge the auto industry and human ingenuity.
And no, this does not mean the demise of sports cars. Look at BMW, they are a great example of how to increase horsepower while at the same time increasing mpg numbers without changing the gasoline engine into anything radically different. 240hp and 26mpg combined is great, keep it coming.
hmm, "could mean $2000 more to the price of the average automobile?" Im going to assume that is at the higher end since they would probably want to scare people away with that number, but $2000 seems like a small price to pay for less destruction to our planet. just look at all the people willing to pay a premium for a hybrid/electric vehicle!

lol and hybrid/electric cars don't hurt the planet? Where does that electricity come from? You've only shifted the pollution somewhere else. Know what wouldve been easier to push higher efficiency vehicles, increasing the fuel tax. The fuel requirements continue to increase every single year, there is a limit to how well an ICE can perform.
Why do you trust people that have never designed anything remotely close to a car to decide these fuel numbers? WTF do they know? Buy up your car before 2015, because its going to be downhill from there. Remember what happened in the 1970s? It took over 20 years for the performance in sports cars to return to 1960s levels.

Our gasoline consumption has plummetted back to 1997 levels. We EXPORT a huge amount of gasoline now. Refineries are closing around the country because of reduced demand and more efficient vehicles. MPG has greatly advanced in the past 20 years while the power and weight went up at the same time. Yet "it hasnt advanced in the last couple of decades"? All of this happened without a govt mandate.
But don't worry all those career politicians that some of y'all love so much have all the answers despite they have never designed a product in their entire lives.

We had a thread that showed we went from 5 to like 80 cars with over 500hp!!!
Don't believe these grumpy old fear tactic using politicians.
Don't delay progress, welcome it.

Of course the White House wants legislation like this, we have a Liberal White House right now. (Regardless of how you might lean, the Liberals are for this, the Conservatives against it, by and large).
The problem is, people don't want super efficient cars. If they did I wouldn't be beating my head in to buy Jeep Commanders and SRT8 anythings, and Trailblazer SSs and Escalades and Tahoes and Denalis. Oh and Grand Cherokees? They better have a Hemi!
Believe me, if people wanted really fuel efficient cars, they'd buy em.
