It wouldn't affect me that much if prices of gas went up to $10/gal.

I'm lucky that I found a job that allows me to take public transportation to work. 99% of people are not able too in So Cal. I take the Metrolink to work (from OC to downtown LA) and I love it, my work even reimburses me some of the money for my monthly ticket as well.

Love the train, I sleep going to and going home from work on the train. Cant beat that!

So I have a beat up Corolla to drive to/from the station and I have a M3 as my weekend toy.

And the wife has an economical CRV to drive around.

I'd probably drive the ES more. And, more than likely use the Accord more often as well, because as of now it's just a winter beater which rarely get's used during the summer.

The same thing I do now - Drive the 7 miles(soon to be 2.5 mi) to the train m-th & drive either the eclipse or the sc4 to work on Friday's & when it rains & drive around like a madman all weekend alternating cars depending upon the purpose/destination/companionship.

$10/gal wouldn't change my life too much at first, but i would definitely feel the pinch and try to come up with some sort of cost reduction strategy. I would probably consider moving closer to work (i rent, so it's flexible) and *maybe* an econo car eventually. I wouldn't drive as much and most of my "to do errands" would be done after work on the way home to keep gas usage as low as possible.

It's a shame we can't get true ultra-eco cars like that here in the U.S......though, admittedly, some small Euro-models like that aren't built to U.S. safety/crash-standards. We do get a couple of ultra-high-MPG hybrids here like the Chevy Volt and Toyota Prius Plug-In, but, IMO, even considering the tax-credits and the expensive lithium-on battery-packs, they are overpriced. And the Volt, IMO, in addition, has significant design and ergonomic problems.
I doubt any of them get better than 60 mpg in real life highway driving.

Our family cars with 2.0l diesels average 30-40 mpg, because we drive a lot more in the cities and when on highway, we drive faster which spends more fuel...

There is really nothing in Europe that gets better mpg than Prius BUT we dont have big trucks.. if we do, they are usually diesels and 4cly so you can get 20-25 mpg in them (real life).

We just drive a lot less overall.

I'll never drive a Prius, that's for sure!

Might drive the old cars a bit less, the Lincoln gets 8 in town... (weighs close to 3 tons loaded and has a 430 aka 7.0L V8)

I don't have a huge commute either... For work I drive less than 15 miles a day.

In China where gas prices is real high, taxis use propane/natural gas instead of gasoline. A lot cheaper, super easy to convert, just lose a little power.

My commute is 95 miles total a day so I guess I just gotta pay up. Or have the power to fly/teleport would definitely help.

Being two and 1/2 miles from work I doubt it would make me stop driving my Pathfinder or MPV even with their poor MPGs compared to todays cars.

It can go to 20 dollars a gallon and it wouldn't make a difference to me. My daily commute is about 36 miles and I drive a Volt. I do not use any gas. I can charge it at work. My cost is .50-.60/day.

I commute via train, so a tank usually lasts me about 2 weeks or more. So i'd still buy gas when i have to.

You might have to look for one used....or get a CT instead. New HS models are going out of production from low sales.
