I guess the new 3 was never designed with v8 in mind. I didn't notice how compact it was when I check out the 328 engine bay, since the 2.0 was so small there is decent room in there.

That strut brace looks interesting.

With that said: Good luck to whoever is going to do repairs for that engine

Pretty cool that BMW chose F30 post to debut this pic.

As little torque as my friend's NA AMG CL63 has, it only has a big NA V8, it already can't use all of it's power off the line, it start to feels pointless. It is only good from a roll, like a Honda ricer with a turbo VTEC B18 or a SRT4 dude
It's not a muscle car, and general consensus is RWD handles more enjoyably the AWD.

Very true, agreed 100%.

With that logic though, NA is more enjoyable then boosted

I wonder if the 6 is a lot lighter than the V8. I think this is a great move. Hopefully they will be adding some torque to keep up with AMG's crazy torquey engines. In the end the M3 will always be the benchmark because , unlike the AMG C class, its balance will be superior

i think going with 6 is mainly for the fuel efficiency. possible that v8 is heavier, but we all know with the right materials and design, v8 can be pretty light too

Going with I6 is solely for fuel efficiency, the twin turbo hardwares is definitely much heavier then 2 cylinders.

Come to think of it, this is the modern day MKIV Supra..............Twin Turbo Inline-6 RWD coupe

This one will handle great though, unlike the Supra

Tunability should be similar unless the aluminum block crack much easier then the Supra's iron block. So M3 will be 450 hp stock, should be able to crank that baby up to 600~700 hp easily. Just look at how all the tuned 335i is doing!

Reliability........no

Well, depends on the application, right?

You can do a high-lag, high-boost turbo to significantly increase acceleration, but not at all useable for short bursts of power.

Or, like many new cars are debuting, a small turbo that really only serves in increase torque at low RPMs, significantly improving engine response without introducing much of a delay, or any at all, between foot and butt-accelerometer.

Slightly off-topic question:

-Is it possible to tune a NATURALLY-ASPIRATED engine? (you know like what they do in Gran Turismo 5 where you can buy faster ECU, better exhaust, engine upgrades, etc.)

Or not? (i.e. if BMW gives you a stock 400 hp NA engine, then you're stuck with 400 hp. No power upgrades, no nothing)

yes, but it is expensive and gains are small.

vs someone changing settings in your ECU for turbo applications.
