Wow that's a crazy looking engine bay, kinda messy in a way. But the tower brace looks really cool.

If you click on another link on that site, there is an interesting M4 (F82). I've never heard of that vehicle before.

Regarding the 4 series I believe BMW is redesignating the 3 coupe and convertible as a 4 series

Default BMW 2014 F80 M3 Engine (Turbo Inline 6) Physically Exposed!

Back in May we first confirmed that the F80 M3 and F82 M4 would be powered by an inline 6 cylinder turbo engine and indeed we've just received these first photos of the next gen M3/M4 engine, with visual proof of the inline cylinder setup.

The F80 M3 / F82 M4 will have some good cooling of the the heated air pumping from its turbos, via components such as the air-to-water/liquid intercooler unit (to the right of the engine cover) feeding the cylinders with cooled air. If this setup is anything like in the M5/M6 S63Tu engine, the air is cooled by this unit right before it reaches the cylinders. There appears to be twin intake boxes and the oil cooler bracket looks to be the same as on the N54 and N55 engines.

The photos do not confirm the exact number of turbos, but the two charge pipes feeding the intercooler is a sign that it probably has at least two turbochargers. Whether a third electric turbo (rumored) lies somewhere out of sight remains to be seen.

Expect this engine to output in the ballpark of 450 horsepowers. It's been rumored to be an extensively reworked and reinforced N55 6-cylinder engine with a strengthened aluminium block with a heavily modified cylinder head. The Induction technology is said to be completely new as will be the latest bi-vanos variable valve timing. This engine may also be a reworked/enhanced version of the successor engine to the N55 (which has not yet been introduced).

The F80 M3 will no doubt be the stiffest M3 yet, and the brawny strut tower brace surely contributes to just how tightly the entire car will handle and feel.

How will this engine sound? We've just posted the latest M3 prototype videos from the Nurburgring, so have a listen @ url]http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=743864[/url]

To recap on the F80 M3 / F82 M4:

Lighter than current M3
Faster than current M3
More powerful than current M3
More efficient than current M3
Powered by an inline 6 cylinder turbo engine
Offered with optional or standard manual transmission
Electric Power Steering (completely reworked for precision for M3/M4)
Tires (from prototype) - Michelin Pilot Super Sport: 255/35/19 (front), 275/35/19 (rear)
Front styling to feature elements from the M6 and 1M coupe, with Air Curtain technology (our render)
Hood to feature power/vent bump
M3 Introduced late 2013 - early 2014 (concept debuts earlier)
M4 Introduced no earlier than late 2014

Maybe Lexus will follow suit and make the next IS-F V6/I6 turbo.

It'll be smooth and powerful for sure. Won't have that snappy V8 sound though :/

Long live the BMW 4.0 V8 and 5.0 V10

Can't change the fact they are switching everything turbo, so might as well accept it, and enjoy the low-end torque and easy tuning.

I don't have to accept it since I don't care for what is latest and greatest, there are tons of other choices and I never mind a nice used car.

Huge low-end torque is awesome but I never understand how people can use it with only 2WD, power is useless without traction. If I am owning a high boost sports car for the rush, it must be 4WD.......aka Nissan GTR, 911 Turbo, Continental SuperSport.......etc.

As little torque as my friend's NA AMG CL63 has, it only has a big NA V8, it already can't use all of it's power off the line, it start to feels pointless. It is only good from a roll, like a Honda ricer with a turbo VTEC B18 or a SRT4 dude

I would much rather have the turbo 6. You get better torque, mpgs, and you dont need to frikn red line the thing to get it to really pull. I think the power in the new version will much more useable.

Haven't you heard(No pun intended)? BMW enjoys playing engine sounds through the stereo on the new M's, so they can make it sound like its a V8.
