Default Volvo sells out of V60 Diesel Plug-in Hybrid

Volvo announced that the first batch of its V60 Plug-in Hybrid has sold out in Europe, with no plans to sell in the US, before the car even reached the showrooms. The world’s first diesel PHEV features a unique design: a 2.4 liter, five-cylinder turbodiesel powers the front wheels, while a 70 hp electric motor drives the rear wheels. In electric-only Pure Mode, the V60 has a range of about 30 miles. In Power Mode, it boasts 285 hp and 640 Nm of torque, and can do 0-100 kph in 6.1 seconds.

The V60 PHEV was jointly developed by Volvo and Swedish electricity supplier Vattenfall. After the initial batch of 1,000 cars for model year 2013, Volvo will increase production to 5,000 units for model year 2014.

The excitement of the news was only slightly diminished by Senior VP Doug Speck’s statement at the Paris Motor Show on Thursday, which was almost a verbatim repetition of a statement that Volvo released last December: “None of our competitors can offer customers an equally ingenious car. Its uncompromising attitude to green motoring elevates hybrid technology to an entirely new level.”

so electric only mode is 70hp, while power mode is 285 hp?

why would you drive it in 70hp mode? I bet it is pretty heavy car with those big batteries required for 30 miles and diesel engine.

Remember, hp doesn't move cars, torque does. Electric motors make 100% of their torque at 0rpm, and the 150lbft that this one puts out is more than sufficient to drive around moderately. It's not like you need to get to 60 in 6 seconds from every stoplight, and if you do, this isn't the car for you. When you do need more power, the engine is there to provide it. In spades, as there's 470 lbft on tap with both powerplants. That's exactly the same as the 7 Liter V8 in the Corvette Z06.

So it boils down to balance. Tons of power when you want it, adequate power and a 30 mile range without using a drop of fuel when you don't. I think it's brilliant.

70hp is 70hp... it is probably 4000lbs+ car. It is too little.

150hp would be "enough"... 70hp is nothing.

Scion iQ EV has 64hp electric engine that moves it 0-62 in 12.4 seconds. Now imagine car 100% heavier with same engine...

It is just technology excercise, not a real car.

why are you harping on 70hp from the electric motor? 285hp is the total in Power Mode.....OK!! we get it, you would leave it POWER MODE 100% of the time

BTW - wow many hp do you think is needed to cruise 60mph? not 285hp - even if the SUV weighs 5000 lbs.

The V70 Diesel Hybrid is a real car I believe. In fact, Volvo is even selling it (and not like lease or long-term rent like Honda is doing atm).

Sure, it's a first-gen product (in the case of Volvo) but man, I would really want to purchase this diesel-electric hybrid car as well.

If this car can run and survive on our crappy Euro II diesel fuel (Philippines), then I would not hesitate to shell out money for it
