COSTA MESA, CA--Oct. 2, 2012: Hyundai Motor America wrapped up the third quarter of 2012 setting multiple sales records including a record 60,025 sales for the month of September. Sales were up 15 percent for the month and up 10 percent for the first nine months of the year versus 2011.
"September was a very encouraging month for Hyundai as we avoided the traditional back-to-school sales decline and began to reap the benefits of a materially improved inventory situation on our core vehicle lines," said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of sales. "We're well positioned for a strong fourth quarter as sales of the newly launched Elantra GT, Elantra Coupe, the all-new Azera and all-new Santa Fe continued at a brisk pace. Our fourth quarter production plan is up nearly 20 percent on a year-over-year basis."
The all-new Azera and the Elantra family saw sales gains of a remarkable 1028 percent and 27 percent, respectively, over last September. The Tucson saw sales gains of 23 percent over the same period a year ago, and Veloster, the three-door coupe now available in both turbo and non-turbo models, continues to impress with a sales gain of 262 percent. Hyundai fleet sales and mix remained low at a nine percent mix for the month and year-to-date, among the lowest in the industry.

I'm surprised Lexus isn't selling more 4GS. I see them all over in NYC here, such a great car, and lease rates are very reasonable.

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported September U.S. sales of 24,135 vehicles, representing a decrease of 5.4 percent versus last year. Year-to-date sales through September are up 9.5 percent (9.0 percent DSR) versus last year, with 209,482 vehicles sold.

Key September sales notes:

Mazda3 achieves its best September ever with 14,031 sales, solidifying a 57.1 percent increase when compared to September of 2011.

In the U.S., Mazda's total SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY vehicle sales for September (comprised of CX-5 and certain models of Mazda3) account for 67.4 percent of the company's total sales for the month.

Mazda3, with SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY, accounted for 84.0 percent of all Mazda3 sales in September.

Mazda MX-5 Miata saw an increase of 16.6 percent year-over-year with a total of 505 vehicles sold in the month of September.

Mazda CX-5 continues to exceed expectations, posting strong sales of 4,468 units in the month of September. Because of high customer interest in CX-5, the vehicle has been hampered by a lack of availability nationwide since its launch. Increased production volumes are now starting to match supply with demand.

Mazda Motor de Mexico (MMdM) reported September sales of 1,874 vehicles, down 30.0 percent versus September of last year.

Mazda North American Operations is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., and oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States and Mexico through more than 700 dealers. Operations in Mexico are managed by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

SEPTEMBER U
.SAUTO SALES
U.S. auto sales, led by Toyota, Kia, American Honda and Volkswagen, rose 13 percent last month as the annualized pace of sales accelerated to 14.9 million -- the highest rate since March 2008.

The overall results topped analysts' expectations and signaled the auto industry is poised to continue overcoming mixed economic reports to finish the year on a strong note.

Passenger car demand drove industry results last month, with sales of sedans, coupes and wagons up 23 percent. Consumers continued to opt for fuel-efficient models amid high gasoline prices. Light truck volume edged up 4 percent.

Sales have climbed 15 percent to 10.9 million through September and remain on track to top 14 million for the year, automakers and analysts say.

"The auto industry had another very encouraging month in September," said Bill Fay, Toyota group vice president and general manager.

September marked the 4th consecutive month and 7th month this year the SAAR has topped 14 million. August's SAAR of 14.5 million marked the best showing since August 2009, when the U.S. government offered incentives for buyers to swap older vehicles for new models.

Low interest rates, easing credit markets, selective use of incentives, new and redesigned models, and pent-up demand are fueling the industry's sales gains.

At Toyota, combined sales at the Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands jumped 42 percent. It was the 4th time in 5 months deliveries rose 40 percent or more as the automaker continues to rebound from last year's earthquake in Japan.

The Toyota division posted a 41 percent increase, helped by passenger car sales, while Scion demand rose 76 percent and Lexus deliveries advanced 36 percent.

Sales were strong all month beginning with the Labor Day holiday, Toyota said.

Toyota said shoppers are responding to low financing options and said it planned to continue offering a wide range of zero percent and low-interest rate loans in October.

Camry leases will once again be available at less than $200 a month in most parts of the country, Toyota added.

At Honda, sales jumped 31 percent, with the Honda brand up 29 percent and Acura posting a 44 percent increase. Demand for the Honda Civic and Accord soared 57 percent, Honda said, while deliveries of the CR-V advanced 14 percent.

Firing on all cylinders

It was the 5th straight month that Honda's U.S. sales gain topped 30 percent.

"Honda is once again firing on all cylinders as we enter fall," John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of sales, said in a statement.

Volkswagen reported sales at the VW brand climbed 34 percent and boasted it expects to continue to outperform the industry during the 4th quarter. Audi said volume rose 27 percent and said it remains on track to set an annual sales record in the United States for 2012. Overall sales for the VW group were up 32 percent.

At Kia, sales rose 35 percent to 48,105, keeping it on pace for an annual sales record this year as well. Hyundai brand sales rose 15 percent to 60,025, marking its biggest gain since February.

Chrysler Group posted a 12 percent rise, helped by a 27 percent increase in car deliveries and a 51 percent gain at Fiat.

It was the company's 30th consecutive monthly gain in U.S. sales, but the smallest advance since volume rose 10 percent in May 2011.

Deliveries at General Motors, Ford Motor and Nissan Motor Co. were mostly flat in September.
Sales climbed 51 percent last month at Fiat.

Detroit's two biggest automakers cited lower truck volume -- a traditional stronghold -- for sales that were down less than a percent at Ford and up just 1.5 percent at GM.

The results mean more market share losses for the companies.

The Hyundai-Kia Group, Nissan Motor and the BMW Group have also lost market share this year.

Volume at the Ford division was unchanged and Lincoln demand dropped 3 percent. Ford said retail sales climbed 4 percent last month.

Ford's car sales inched up 1.6 percent and utility vehicle volume rose 9 percent, but truck deliveries slipped 8 percent, partly as a result of the discontinuation of the Ranger pickup.

'On plan'

"The industry is on plan, Ford is on plan, and we're looking forward to a really good 4th quarter," said Ken Czubay, head of U.S. marketing, sales and service for Ford.

GM said car volume rose 29 percent and crossover demand inched up 3 percent. GM's truck sales slipped 20 percent, reflecting a 46 percent drop in fleet sales

Chevrolet posted a 1.5 percent increase and Buick volume rose 8 percent, while Cadillac deliveries slipped 1.3 percent and GMC was flat. GM said retail sales at all 4 brands increased.

At Nissan Motor, sales slipped 1.1 percent, with the Nissan division down 2.4 percent and Infiniti advancing 11.4 percent.

The BMW Group reported a 3.5 percent increase, with volume flat at the BMW brand and Mini up 23 percent.

"The economic indicators and consumer confidence are showing improvement and the traffic in our showrooms is further encouraging our optimism for the 4th quarter," Ludwig Willisch, CEO of BMW of North America, said in a statement.

Deals, deals, deals

Fatter discounts on remaining 2012 models also helped drive industry sales last month.

Kelley Blue Book says the hottest segments last month were compact crossovers, large pickups and subcompact cars. Chevrolet, Ford and Chrysler offered cash rebates of $3,500 or more on full-sized pickups.

Chrysler's incentives averaged $3,256 last month, the highest among major automakers, TrueCar.com estimates.

Availability and affordability of auto financing is improving faster than home mortgage rates are falling, said Diane Swonk, chief economist with Mesirow Financial in Chicago.

That helps explain why U.S. auto sales are coming back faster than the housing market, she added.

Lightbulb Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Motors North America reported September sales of the Outlander Sport that marked the highest total for a month in the 2 years the fuel-efficient crossover has been on the market.

As Mitsubishi Motors North America reported, outlander Sport sales were 2,253 for the month, an increase of 49.0 percent compared to September 2011. The previous record monthly sales for Outlander Sport were 1,618 in March of this year.

"The Outlander Sport's combination of fuel-efficiency, performance, and style, as highlighted in the 'Unpretentious' Outlander Sport marketing campaign, is obviously resonating with customers," said MMNA President & CEO Yoichi Yokozawa.

Outlander Sport continues to be Mitsubishi's top seller in the U.S. and began production in Normal, Illinois in July.

Overall Mitsubishi sales were 4,806 units, down 17.2 percent compared to September 2011. "Comparisons to last year's total sales are still being slightly affected by some models that ended their production last year," Yokozawa added. "Obviously, this effect will have a diminishing impact over the next few months."

Why would anyone buy a Mitsubishi model?

So X1 is considered as a passenger car instead of a light truck by BMW.

by EPA... BMW would have preffered it to be classified as truck due to mileage standards.

Default Ford C-Max Hybrid is Blue Oval's best-selling hybrid in first month of sales

Ford C-Max Hybrid is Blue Oval's best-selling hybrid in first month of sales

The bad news for Ford is that its C-Max Hybrid wagon was solidly beaten by sales of the Toyota Prius V last month. The good news is the C-Max outsold all of Ford's other hybrids in its very first month, hinting that things could get real interesting between the C-Max and V in the future. Ford has been heavily touting the C-Max Hybrid as an alternative to the Prius V, and we're about to get real data on if that approach is working.

Ford moved 969 C-Max Hybrids in September, edging out the Fusion Hybrid, with 898 sold, and the Lincoln MKZ, with 781. Granted, the C-Max fell well short of the Prius V's September sales of 1,652 vehicles. Still, the C-Max eclipsed the Ford Fusion Hybrid's debut-month sales of 402 units in March 2009 (the Fusion moved 1,073 units the following month). And in its debut month of September 2010, the Lincoln MKZ hybrid moved just ten units, followed by sales of 366 units in October 2010. Looks like Ford is getting better at making hybrids people want to buy.

In June, Ford said that the C-Max would beat the Prius V's combined fuel economy of 42 miles per gallon combined, and in August made good on that promise by getting a 47-mpg rating across the board. The C-Max, with its $25,995 base price, also undercuts the Prius V by $500. The automaker started taking orders for the C-Max Hybrid in May and has been directly targeting the V in press releases and commercials.
