Default September 2012 Auto Sales Thread

so it begins

DETROIT—Auto makers on Tuesday will report new-vehicle sales for September and are expected to show healthy growth. Market researchers such as Edmunds.com and TrueCar.com predict sales of about 1.1 million cars and light trucks, a rise of almost 11% from a year earlier.
But a close look at forecasts indicates that much of the gain is driven by two manufacturers: Toyota Motor Corp. 7203.TO +0.37% and Honda Motor Co. 7267.TO +0.17% TrueCar forecasts that Toyota's sales rose 33% in September and that Honda's rose 27%. That compares with depressed levels a year ago, when the two still were reeling from disruptions caused by the March earthquake in Japan.
Their Detroit rivals are on track for smaller increases. TrueCar sees Ford Motor Co. F +0.71% reporting a 1.3% rise, and General Motors Co. GM +1.49% a 2.5% bump. Sales at Chrysler Group LLC are expected to increase 8%.
The difference reflects just how tough the competition is in today's auto industry. The Detroit Three have recovered from the auto crash of 2008-09 and now field lines of passenger cars that can go toe to toe with the best Japanese models. GM, Ford and Chrysler all gained market share last year.
But Toyota and Honda are clawing back. Toyota redesigned its Camry sedan, and Honda has a new Civic compact. A revamped Honda Accord is arriving in showrooms now.
"Honda is giving us great [supply] and great incentives," says Brian Benstock, general manager of Paragon Honda in Woodside, N.Y.
Overall, the industry has wind at its back, despite the uncertain economy, he says. Many consumers are driving older vehicles that they must replace, banks again are eager to lend for auto purchases and leases, and new vehicles are arriving with improved fuel economy, an attraction for buyers wary of $4-a-gallon gasoline.
"Right now, people have a lot of strong reasons to buy," Mr. Benstock says.
For Toyota and Honda, the arrival of updated versions of the Camry and Accord represent openings to keep growth high. Those models have been such big sellers for so long that there are millions of loyal owners of older Camrys and Accords to appeal to.
"There is a huge opportunity for trade-ins on old Accords," says Lacey Plache, chief economist for Edmunds. "There is a big base of owners to draw from."
She says the opportunity may not last long. Years ago, the Camry and Accord stood head and shoulders above their rivals. But now consumers have a wide selection of stylish and well-regarded models to choose from. Ford is introducing a highly anticipated Fusion midsize car, Nissan Motor Co.'s 7201.TO +1.07% new Altima is near the top of the field with 38 miles per gallon on the highway and GM has a new Chevrolet Malibu coming.
"There's really not a horrible vehicle in this segment," Ms. Plache says.

TORRANCE, Calif., (Oct. 2, 2012) – Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., reported monthly sales of 171,910 units in September 2012, up 41.5 percent on both a daily selling rate (DSR) basis and on an unadjusted raw volume basis.
Chrysler Group said it sold 142,041 vehicles in the U.S. last month, a 12% improvement from the same month a year earlier and its best September since 2007.

Toyota reported monthly U.S. sales of 171,910 vehicles, up 41.5% from a year earlier.

General Motors Co. said its sales rose almost 2% to 210,245 vehicles, its highest September U.S. sales since 2008. Passenger cars were particularly brisk sellers for GM but its truck business lagged, falling 20% because of a reduction in sales to fleet customers.

Volkswagen Group of America said it sold 36,339 vehicles in the U.S. last month, a 34.4% increase and its best September since 1972.

But Ford Motor Co. sales stalled. The carmaker sold 174,976 vehicles in September, about 200 fewer than the same period a year earlier.
Compared to analysts predictions, Toyota did a lot better, Chrysler did a little bit better, GM did a little bit worse and Ford did little big worse.

It is going to be Epic.

General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) today reported its highest September U.S. sales since 2008: 210,245 vehicles, up 1.5 percent compared with a year ago. New products helped drive a 29 percent increase in passenger car sales. Sales of GM’s mini, small and compact cars alone were up a combined 97 percent, and all GM brands increased their retail sales.

“Passenger cars have been the launch point for a broad and deep GM product offensive,” said Kurt McNeil, vice president of U.S. sales operations. “Auto sales will continue to be a bright spot for the U.S. economy, which is particularly good news for GM as we walk into an even stronger cadence of new products in 2013 and 2014.”

GM has moved aggressively to replace existing vehicles with better designs, more technology and improved fuel economy. At the same time, GM is entering growth segments and offering new entry points for each brand. Seventy percent of GM nameplates will be all new or redesigned in 2012 and 2013.

September’s car sales increase reflected a strong start for the new Chevrolet Spark and Cadillac XTS, continued strong sales of the Buick Verano, Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Sonic, and a 2nd consecutive sales record for the Chevrolet Volt. September also marked the 1st deliveries of the all-new Cadillac ATS.

The GMC Terrain and Acadia crossovers had strong months as well, with sales up 8 percent and 16 percent, respectively. This helped drive a 3 percent increase for all GM crossovers versus a year ago.

Truck sales were down 20 percent due to a 46 percent year-over-year reduction in fleet sales due to the timing of customer deliveries. In the large pickup segment, GM’s total sales were down 12 percent and fleet sales were down 56 percent. However, GM reduced its large pickup inventories by approximately 8,600 units compared with August, and earned average transaction prices more than $2,300 per unit above a year ago with the lowest incentive spending in the industry, according to J.D. Power PIN data.

Reading GM and Ford PR's, you would think they are not losing marketshare... who do they think they are kidding? Not investors looking at their stock.

Lightbulb Audi

Audi today reported its 21st consecutive month of record performance with sales of 12,302 new vehicles representing a 26.5% increase above the old mark set in September 2011.

Total Audi sales year-to-date increased 18.5% from last year, with September setting the record for the period January through September, with 100,694 vehicles sold. Audi already has exceeded 100,000 U.S. sales for the third time ever, and September 2012 stands as the third-best month of U.S. sales in Audi of America history.

Sales of Audi premium category vehicles (the Audi A8, Audi A7, Audi A6, and Audi Q7) showed no signs of slowing down, with a 35.7% share of total September sales. Audi momentum benefitted strongly from robust demand for the technologically advanced Audi A6, generating a 83.7% sales increase for the month and a 107.5% increase year to date. Audi’s flagship vehicle, the Audi A8 sedan, is up 34.1% and the Audi Q7 luxury SUV also performed favorably with an astounding 94.6% increase for the month.

Sales of the updated Audi A4 combined with the new Audi allroad jumped 12.8% in September from a year earlier, while the product improvement for the Audi A5 helped boost its sales 25.6% for the month and 10.9% year-to-date. Furthering the U.S. position as a top market globally for Audi S model performance cars, sales of the Audi performance models accounted for 10.4% of the September’s sales mix.

“Our newly expanded lineup of S-model performance cars is delivering strong immediate results,” said Mark Del Rosso, Chief Operating Officer, Audi of America. “This fact, along with increasing demand for our refreshed core models, bodes well for record sales results by year-end and more gains into 2013.”

Highlights:
• September 2012 ranks as the best September in Audi of America history.
• Sales mix for Audi S models finished the month at 15.3% for the S4 and 35.5% for the S5/ RS 5.

Quick comparo:

YTD Luxury Sales Results
Mercedes: 191,618
BMW: 186,397
Lexus: 170,990
Audi: 100,694
Notes: Looks like the finishing order for this year should be 1) Mercedes 2) BMW 3) Lexus.

September 2012 Sales by Brand (August in parentheses)
BMW: 21,761 (16,835)
Lexus: 20,386 (24,237)
Mercedes: 19,311 (20,557)
Audi: 12,302 (11,524)
Notes: BMW is back on track after their inventory shenanigans bit them in the *** last month. Mercedes was also up over 1k units. Good month for Audi too. Lexus was down about 4k units over last month...looks like they are still trying to stabilize production and inventory with new and older products.

September Entry Level Luxury Sedan Sales (August in parentheses):
BMW 3 Series: 7,731 (6,208)
Lexus ES: 6,553 (7,557)
Mercedes C Class: 5,663 (6,519)
Audi A4: 3,035 (3,187)
Lexus IS: 2,248 (2,369)
Notes: 3 is back up in September and outsold the ES by a solid 1,200 units. C is bringing up the rear with the others well behind. It will be interesting to see how ES sales continue to do over the next few months.

September Midsize Luxury Sedan Sales (August in parentheses):
Lexus ES: 6,553 (7,557)
Mercedes E Class: 5,089 (4,515)
BMW 5 Series: 3,189 (1,688)
Audi A6: 2,065 (1,569)
Lexus GS: 1,454 (1,831)
Notes: E Class picked up a few units and the 5 series is back up after August, but numbers are still lower than they should be. A6 had a good month and the GS did not. Second month of ES and GS coexisting and both are down over August.

September Entry Level Luxury CUV Sales (August in parentheses):
Lexus RX: 7,046 (8,628)
BMW X3: 3,034 (2,829)
Mercedes GLK: 1,880 (2,775)
Audi Q5: 2,256 (2,007)
Notes: RX went down about 1,600 units - quite a tumble. I wonder if this has to do with inventories of the new model? GLK also took a 900 unit tumble, but the X3 and Q5 were consistent.

September Midsize Luxury CUV/SUV Sales (August in parentheses):
Lexus RX: 7,046 (8,628)
BMW X5: 3,850 (3,568)
Mercedes ML: 1,790 (2,243)
Lexus GX: 948 (1,071)
Audi Q7: 1,051 (951)
Notes: RX and ML dropped off considerably, the others are rather flat.

Best Selling Luxury Vehicle
BMW 3 Series: 68,352
Lexus RX: 67,048

"Combined with the strength of key models such as Civic, CR-V and Odyssey, Honda is once again firing on all cylinders as we enter fall."
